The C 47 gets most attention as the workhorse of US military transport in WW 2, yet the C 46 could carry much larger loads, and was produced in the thousand. My understanding is that reliability and maintenance were greater issues for it, and that is why comparatively few were used in civilian aviation after the war, while the DC 3/C 47 saw extensive use.
