Dublin - Donegal Done In A Day! BE S340 DUB CFN

Wed Jan 28, 2015 4:44 pm

SAAB 340B Dublin - Donegal Done in a Day!

For Christmas I got a brilliant present from me parents – a flyBe flight DUB – CFN – DUB. I asked because it would be on a little SAAB 340B! Loganair currently operate this flight for BE but on the 1st Feb the Government contract will be handed over to Stobart Air for EI Regional. So many franchises! On the 24th of January I flopped out of bed at 7.30am and got a lift off Mammy to DUB.

flyBe operate out of T1 in DUB. I know T2 is the new, fancy, terminal; and for many years T1 was a gripe for many people with horrific queues, a strange, dark, industrial like interior…but as I mosied up to check in I got that cosy warm feeling I always have in this part of DUB. To me for so many years it was the beginning (and ending) of some amazing journeys…and for this reason I always feel more at home there, in the crappy old part rather than the sexy new T2! Not saying that T2 isn’t impressive…it just isn’t home for me…yet. The queue for BE (the screen just said All Destinations) was non-existent.

The nice girl checked me in and gave me both boarding passes for the day. Sweet.

Security only took five minutes on this Saturday morning, thank god.

I stocked up on food in Boots (can’t beat that €4.90 meal deal wha?), and headed down to gate 204, in the weird gates in Pier A. I sat there, and upon checking noticed that the screens weren’t displaying the flight anymore and were just showing DUB social media. I sat back down….and fifteen minutes before departure I heard LAST CALL FOR FLYBE FLIGHT 6792 TO DONEGAL BOARDING FROM GATE 207! Ah here, what?! Ok I had been dozing off here and there but I did NOT hear a gate change announcement! I legged it down more stairs to the gate (hearing the dispatchers say ah, here ye are to the gate agent) and fumbled me boarding pass and passport out to the gate agent and then ran out dopily out the door. Didn’t even get to take a photo agh!!

BE 6792 DUB – CFN

S340B G – LGNN (24 years young…previously with Business Express, Colgan Air in the US and Aerolittoral of Mexico, no pics though)

The tiny airstairs (more like a step ladder) shook as I ran up and showed me boarding pass. The solo cabin crew informed me that me seat 7D was an emergency exit and to stow everything in the overhead. Grand, I did as I was told, even giving her a bonus laugh when I bumped me head and blurted F**K!! I’ve been on the other side when people disembarking bump their heads off that pesky row one overhead on the 737, usually while they’re in the middle of a very polite and sincere farewell. Beware that row on FR 737s!

Woohoo emergency exit

Teeny hatbins…but somehow the cabin still felt spacious!

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk90/aerdingus/WP_20150124_004%201.jpg

Amazing overhead…the airvent insisted on just blowing air on me no matter which bloody way I twisted it…I wonder if those callbells even work…

I love that it says “Loganair - Scotland’s Airline)

Waiting for another epic prop to land before we could blast off (EI Regional ATR)

Due to our load of eh…five pax, take off was pretty much instantaneous. This old SAAB was living up to the family fighter jet legend!!

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk90/aerdingus/WP_20150124_015%201.jpg

It was epic. And loud. This was me first time on a S340 and wow, the noise! And vibration. The engines pretty much transformed 7D into a Shiatsu butt massager. See, ya don’t have to fly EK or SQ to get these luxuries! Seriously, though I even saw the airstairs vibrating (you can see them stowed next to the main cabin door).
Upon release Julie the cabin crew drew her mysterious curtain over the tiny galley and emerged with her trolley. Bit jealous of that curtain, to be honest. I might just put up me own when I go back to work after unpaid leave.

Coffee and biccies, mm cheers Julie

I wasn’t arsed getting up to walk around the cabin, and was too scared to go to the toilet, so I just sat admiring the views of Ireland from 12,000ft. Flight time was just about fifty minutes, as the all Scottish crew informed us with nice PAs.

I got a fright when I saw we were over the stormy Atlantic in our little toy SAAB!

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk90/aerdingus/WP_20150124_029%201.jpg

Mount Errigal just off our wing

Approaching CFN over Carrickfinn Beach

It got pretty bumpy over the sea for landing and we bumped down fairly positively in CFN! The engines roared epically into reverse. The hatbin containing me trusty Jansport befuddled me and I was scared to open it in case I broke it. Seriously it looked like a dodgy ancient office desk drawer and I had to ask some other pax how the hell to bloody open it…fool. Once that was figured out I was bouncing down the step ladder!

There she is in all her majestic splendour!!

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk90/aerdingus/WP_20150124_054%201_1.jpg

The dispatcher confirmed Sin e? (That’s it?)in Irish to Julie, who being Scottish shares a similar Gaelic language to us. CFN is located in a Gaeltacht, an Irish speaking community.

I’ve arrived!

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk90/aerdingus/WP_20150124_053%201.jpg

This was in the toilet. Note the Celticky style tiles.

I’m pretty sure Clannad (a traditonal Irish group) were playing, piped in. A nice man in a hi viz said hello as I walked through. G-LGNN had been whisked away somewhere. CFN is freaking tiny and as I had four hours until the flight home I decided to go for a walk on the beach.

CFN!

The Irish SXM! Hang on to the fence for the S340B hahaha

Bit surreal to be walking on a beach in Donegal of a Saturday. Beach made me sad ‘cause loads of rubbish was washed up with the tide from this otherwise beautiful wild place. Eventually I ran away because I was afraid the tide was coming in!

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk90/aerdingus/WP_20150124_082%201_1.jpg

Such a beautiful place.

This is CFN! How cute? I got a hot chocolate to warm up after me long walk

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk90/aerdingus/WP_20150124_115%201.jpg

G-LGNN wheeled back out. The crew came back about an hour before departure.

Nice little waiting area. The news was showing footage of the Air Asia recovery operation though

BE 6795 CFN – DUB

During boarding this time I could admire the huge Dowty props

I have no pics of the flight back because I had an aisle seat beside someone. Annd I was kind of half asleep. I originally had 1D but according to Julie it was torture so she changed me! I forgot to tell her that I’m used to sitting backwards on planes ha. As I was sitting up front this time I could see how she dragged the stairs up and into stowage by the door. It looked very heavy and painful. I found meself thinking Jesus we’re so lucky we have a button for that shit on our A/C! I could also see how kind of rough and ready and a bit dirty the cabin was. The flight was fuller this time, with a load of twelve! But the flight back was shorter, forty minutes! I just had a coffee and a Scottish caramel wafer thing. Julie asked was it one sugar for me, saying she had a terrible memory. Ah bless. It took me a sec to understand her Scottish accent so I just kind of laughed like a dope. Also I was sitting right in between the two engines this time, I was deafened! Like sitting between two giant lawnmowers!! But I could see the reflection of our ship in the metal part of the engine and I wished I had the window seat and a decent camera. On approach to DUB for runway 28 you usually pass Howth Head on the left. So I knew when we passed it we would be landing very shortly. Then I remembered we were in a little turbo prop and not a jet. A good few minutes passed til we plopped down in DUB!

These things in Pier A freak me out

Passports were checked in DUB. Whyyy?

I got the Dublin Bus 747 (see what they did there?) with it’s hilarious snooty commentary to Connolly Station and then flopped onto a Commuter train home.

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk90/aerdingus/WP_20150124_127_1.jpg

Well! Me little adventure came to an end.

I wasn’t used to the S340 and its weird noises mid-flight but I still survived and enjoyed it.

BE: 9/10 just ‘cause the cabin was durty. Glad I got to try it before the route ends with this airline. Next I want to do WAT - BHX and maybe try to get on the Barra flight aswell!

DUB: 9/10…cause I’m not sure if I did miss a gate change announcement or not…

CFN: 11/10 It was just lovely. I enjoyed walking around with the locals waving to me and moving their cars over to give me space

Go raibh mile maith agat!

Please sir…can we have some more?

WOW, some real flying there! Those little planes are getting further everyday (Even it seems you have a good load of interesting routes in Uk & Ireland)

It's said that La Seu (LESU) Airport is due to open commercially again, let's see what they bring there, it could make for an interesting flight also!

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! We learn Irish all the way through school as it's our national language. You'll see it everywhere alongside English on signs, documentation etc all over Ireland but generally most people do speak English. However there are certain communities called Gaeltachta, where Irish is spoken as the main language. Thanks again for reading and commenting.

Nice Xmas present you got! Your parents obviously know you well! Nice little report. I like the Saabs, and it's great that they still have some free catering. That part of Ireland looks gorgeous - lucky the sun was out!

Brilliant trip report Aoife!! It's I'm my tops now! Although it is very odd seeing my home on a trip report on airliners.net I'm going to be kind of sad seeing Loganair and those sexy saab's leave Donegal on Sunday although the connections with Aer lingus are good the baggage is a bit of A balls flybe was nicer with there allowance lol. Watched you take off from the living room window on Saturday afternoon going back to Dublin pity the weather isn't great but then again it is Donegal!

Pity the weather was kinda crap. That is usual here sadly. this photo taken at the bottom of carrickfinn beach the one you visited the Thursday before you arrived. Best spot in Ireland in my opinion though I am a bit biased! iPhone pic btw!
Best spot in Ireland less than 500feet from CFN's runway!

This area in Donegal Yes where the airport is situated is in the 'gaeltacht' where Irish is spoken quite a lot and many of the Irish people in this area are fluent in Irish including myself!

I am sure non Irish will enjoy the trip report pictures. I will say though the Saab plane is bigger than I had ever guessed! Thought there was only 10 seats or soemthing.

You didn't go far enough. The reason CFN is in that rural area in Donegal is because of the grants it has gotten when building many years ago because of the Gaeltacht it was originally planned to be in letterkenny (thank god it's not)

Thanks for the wonderful trip report AerDingus!

I really appreciate your sense of humor and candor throughout! I haven't had a chance to visit the airport in Donegal, but now feel like I have to the next time I'm back there based on how well you displayed its charm. I think you've got a great knack for highlighting the specific details that only certain ones of us with your similar line of thinking would get a kick out of. Your description of the plane alone was quite funny IMO! I've yet to take a flight on a Saab, but thanks to you I know exactly what to expect! I can't wait to read the future reports you have in store for us. Thanks again for sharing!

Best,

Isn't that the truth, one of my favorite hotels in the world Lough Eske is just outside Donegal, I am sorry to say, I never knew Donegal even had an airport, crap.

Though the drive from Dublin is full of fantastic scenery, being on typical Irish roads, it can be a long slog after a trans Atlantic flight, i'm going to have to remember this next time we head over.

Great report Aerdingus - loved the day trip you took and that part of Ireland is certainly so beautiful. Thanks for publishing this one.

The Saab is a loud little beast for sure but pretty swift moving for a prop. I spent a lot of time in one in Australia a couple of years ago which was also a great day trip:

EXCELLENT report, always interested in regional flying in UK & Ireland, particularly Loganair. Liked your funny bits too.

Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed, there is also routes like DUB - KIR on EI Regional for you to try. I want to do it soon!

Hi Aerdingus,

Enjoyed the out-of-ordinary report you got here, and nice pictures also! Donegal seems like a real serene place, perfect for a day-trip getaway from the larger cities! Great that you were able to log the SAAB 340B, and the legroom seems to be more generous than what I've imagined of the rather tiny plane. Many thanks for sharing this report with us!

Best Regards,

Hi Aerdingus,

Very nice report, very amusing style!

Quoting aerdingus (Thread starter):
For Christmas I got a brilliant present from me parents – a flyBe flight DUB – CFN – DUB

The best present for an a.nutter!

Donegal looks very small - from over here NWI is small, that's tiny!
And a nice walk along the beach. In January, that must be crazy! I take it there wasn't time to visit the city (or town)?

All in all a nice day
Quoting aerdingus (Thread starter):
Passports were checked in DUB. Whyyy?

From what I understand, DUB doesn't differentiate between domestic (and CTA, that is UK) passengers and International, so all have to pass through passport control. Once I made a point of showing my photo ID - driving license - after coming in from London, that was fine with the boarding pass stub to prove origin.

Thanks

Absolutely tiny. Ah I like a walk on the beach in any weather. I've even been in the snow! Clears the cobwebs   I had four hours there but I wasn't able to rent a car   and wasn't in the mood for a 10k walk to the nearest town.

Hey Aoife

Fab report and very jealous as I really wanted to do that ! Looks a fab trip and lovely photos. I have not been to Donegal for years but when I did I was in Mount Errigal and Killybegs. Great part of the country to explore.

Another trip to look at is going from Belfast to Derry by train and then taking the Bus Eireann service to Letterkenny. Its lovely scenery.

where people do speak native Irish although i've never heard it.

Its not your fault. Having lived in NI and ROI the Protestant education system does not even teach the culture or history of the Island they live on. Its very basic and Protestant orientated and thats also the view of many of my Unionist friends in the North. Hopefully that will change more and more as we move on. It always surprises me how much more educated a foreigner like me is of both sides history which is a shame really.

Anyway Aoife thanks again for a great report.

Another nice report here. Definitely like reading about the smaller places that I've only heard about on Jeopardy. And just wandering about and looking around...it can be refreshing to explore without things planned down to the minute. Being fond of daytrips, I like to see how different people can take a day and make it exciting for them.

I have yet to receive a gift like that. Ain't losing hope, though...

To me for so many years it was the beginning (and ending) of some amazing journeys…and for this reason I always feel more at home there

I know that feel, when you've been somewhere so many times that it's not a proper trip without going there.

Lovely trip report!

Great to get an insight into this lesser known airport. I always spend a lot of time in Donegal although I've never quite made it to CFN. Interesting to see the Flybe Saabs - I remember them being in the BA livery at LDY a number of years ago.

Am I correct in saying that the service will be operated by Aer Lingus ATR's?

Although I've never been any further than check-in at T2 I do tend to agree that T1 is more homely. Used to fly through DUB every summer for years on family holidays. Dull and crowded, but always still got me excited. It's a lot more quirky as well with the old parts of the airport and then the strange bridge to the shiny Pier D!

Absolutely. Also Burtonport, Ardara, Kincasslagh with it's famous resident, Crolly & Dungloe with the Mary of Dungloe festival!!

It always takes someone without cultural bias to see things more clearly, sadly. But I think this can be a good thing for everyone.

100% correct, with ATR 42s.

Nice report! The SAAB 340 is actually one of my most flown types (GLA-SYY to visit family is common for me), so nice to read someone else's opinion on the aircraft and Loganair.

The noise and the tiny letterbox-sized overhead lockers take some getting used to, my wife hates them.

More interesting trying to leave the last time. Another 340 had blown off the main runway the day before meant only the short runway was in use with a weight restriction, nearly had to fight to get on the flight!

You can just about fit a bag in there.

Omg interesting to say the least! I remember this, it was just shortly before I was supposed to fly and I was a bit freaked out! I must look that up again on Avherald.
