Lufthansa, First Class - B747-8: HKG To FRA

Airline: Lufthansa
Aircraft:
Boeing B 747-8
Cabin:
First Class
Seat:
1K
From:
Hong Kong
To:
Frankfurt
Date:
25. August 2013
Departure:
23:10
Arrival:
05:20 (+1)

BSLFRA

GETTING TO THE AIRPORT

At 20:45 the shuttle leaves from the Novotel to take me back to the airport. There are only to other passengers with me.

I like the design of the terminal structure, it’s really quite impressive.

P1090989

P1090990

P1090992

CHECK-IN

Check-in for the Lufthansa flight is done in row F, with two First Class counters on the far left. The check-in agent issues my boarding passes for the flight to Frankfurt and the onward connection to Basel. She also hands me a voucher for the golf cart shuttle through the terminal. I still have some time on my hands, and so I decide to walk instead.

P1090991

P1090993

Once check-in is completed, I am escorted to the security check. On our way, the young lady escorting me explains to me that I have a choice of either using the United Airlines lounge or the Thai Airways one. I decide to go for the latter. It’s the same lounge I sat in the day before on my way from Hong Kong to Bangkok with Thai Airways. I will be picked up from the lounge once boarding commences.

THE LOUNGE

There is one other passenger in the First Class section of the lounge. One of the lounge attendants immediately brings me a menu and asks me if I’d like a drink. I order a Perrier with lime and to eat a selection of dim sum.

P1090994

P1090996

BOARDING

True to her word, the escort appears to pick me up about thirty minutes before departure. As we reach the gate there are already two long queues forming for boarding. But the intrepid young lady takes my boarding pass and marches right past the queue to the counter with the scanner. The gate attendant scans my pass and I am cleared to board.

THE CABIN

This is my first experience with the B747-8 and I’m rather curious to see how the First Class cabin compares to that of the older -400 model, with First on the upper deck. There are three window seats on each side of the cabin and one double seat in the middle.

The first impression is good. For one, there is a lot more storage space than there is upstairs. For another, I always find it a bit iffy that a First Class passenger – once on board – should have to schlepp his luggage through the Business Class cabin and then up those stairs. So that’s certainly an improvement. As on the A 380, Lufthansa has also provided individual lockers for passengers.

On the downside, the cabin down here seems more cramped and less intimate. I am on 1K, which is in the tip of the beast’s nose, where the curvature is most pronounced. The proximity here to 1A is a bit too close for me.

Generally speaking, one thing that has always bothered me with Lufthansa, is the complete lack of privacy in First Class. There is of course a screen that can be raised. But even so, compared to the seat Malaysian has on the A 380, you’re still quite exposed as a passenger.

But all of this shall not be of any concern on tonight’s flight, as there are only two other passengers in First tonight, both of which have settled in on row two.

P1100008

SERVICE

Service in the First Class cabin is by a friendly German young woman. She’s very pleasant in her manner, she strikes a balance between making passengers feel at home, without however being intrusive.

At my request, she brings me a glass of water, together with a bowl of nuts and a plate with a warm towel. The rose petal on the plate with the towel is an elegant touch I find.

P1100003

P1100004

P1100010

After that, in sequence, she brings me the pjs, slippers and the vanity kit. Since my last trip with Lufthansa to San Francisco in January, they appear to have changed the vanity kit and replaced it with something by Bogner. It looks just as boring as the previous one to be honest.

P1100009

DEPARTURE

Traffic is quite busy in Hong Kong at this time of night (we’re approaching midnight). Finally, behind the British Airways and Virgin flights to London and a Hog Kong Airways A 330 it’s our turn. The departure route seems somewhat circuitous. We take off in a northerly direction and then initially turn eastwards, then southwards before eventually turning north-westwards in an elegant, wide turn. It’s stunning to watch the clouds lit up by the city below them.

THE MEAL

The flight attendant brings me an amuse bouche of crabmeat with roe in a steamed bun and the menu with that.

P1100011

As she sets the table I can’t but notice that Lufthansa has done quite a bit of revamping of it’s product. It’s small things, like the new cutlery or the napkin holder. All in all I like the changes, they make the experience more elegant. Apart from the butter dish there is now also a dish with olive oil.

P1100012

I choose a slice of garlic bread and some focaccia from the breadbasket, and then we begin.

P1100014

The first course is the signature caviar service with trimmings.

P1100017

For the second course I have a small dish of smoked salmon with blinis, a bowl of mushrooms marinated in rosemary infused olive oil with crème fraîche and a salad of mixed leaves with pine nuts and dried tomatoes. Just of word of caution here: I go for the tomato dressing, which comes in a jar and is produced by Heinz. Whatever you do, at all costs try to avoid this dressing. It’s an abomination!

P1100018

P1100019

P1100020

P1100025

On a side note, the étagère the second course(s) used to be served on has been replaced by a rectangular platter.

For the main course I have the braised beef in a red wine juice, with grilled vegetables and potato gnocchi. The sides are okay, but the beef is just way too fatty and so I leave most of it.

P1100026

For dessert I have a plate of cheese with crackers. I opt for the Stilton, Cheddar and Brie. While the cheese is rather nice, it would have been good to have some dried fruit or, better still, a bit of chutney with the cheese.

P1100027

After the meal I go and change for bed. When I return, the flight attendant has already made up my bed. I lie down and only wake up again much later, three hours out of Frankfurt.

Two hours out of Frankfurt the flight attendant brings me a coffee with milk and sugar, followed be a hot towel to wake me up and a glass of orange juice. She then dresses the table for the breakfast service.

P1100028

P1100030

P1100033

P1100034

P1100038

I start with a plate of fresh fruit.

P1100039

This is followed by a selection of cheese with bread and toast.

P1100036

P1100040

For the hot dish, I have an omelette with tomato coulis and broccoli.

P1100041

To drink I have mint infused still water, which is very refreshing.

ARRIVAL

Once the meal has been cleared away, I busy myself with collecting my stuff from the various stowage compartments and make a few notes for the last in this series of trip reports.

We arrive at gate A69, which at the far end of the newly opened A+ concourse. From here it’s quite a trek where ever you’re going. But that’s alright, it’ll do me good to stretch my legs after the flight and my onward connection to Basel is not for another four hours.

P1100042

So I make my way to the First Class lounge. First thing I do, is have a shower. Perhaps I should send these to British Airways...

P1100048

CONNECTION TO BASEL

Eventually, at 09:15 I head over to the pick up area for passengers being driven to their aircraft. Which is the case here, as a Canadair Regional Jet, using a remote parking position, will operate my flight today.

P1100056

P1100057

I shan’t do a full report on this last leg, after all it’s only a hop of 35 minutes. I have here a few pictures from our departure and of the meal.

I am delighted to see that Lufthansa has finally decided to improve its catering on shorthaul regional routes: instead of those fully disposable plastic and cardboard trays, this meal here is served on real crockery, with real cutlery. And it even tastes good. So well done for that Lufthansa.

P1100058

CLOSING REMARKS

This brings to an end my excursion to Australia. For those of you have joined me along the way, thanks for your interest and also for your patience and endurance.

So how does one bring to an appropriate close such wonderful journey? Here’s my suggestion. While I was at Uluru I visited the Cultural Centre of the Anangu People. The centre is certainly worth visiting. During my visit, there was a woman sitting outside, working on a painting of the Seven Sisters, which is a story from the Dreamtime. There was something so serene about the concentration and accuracy with which she worked on her painting. I feel very fortunate in that this lady accepted my offer to buy the picture from her once she’d finished it. To me, this picture is the essence of my journey to Australia.

Hi William,

Really nice end to your series of adventure to Australia and Asia, I must say that I have been following your adventures all the way from LHR to NRT, followed by Australia and several of the Asian cities you visited in this trip, haven't missed a single one! Thanks for the set of amazing report

LH first look elegant, I must say. It has been years since I last flew with LH on F, which was on the B744 with the older seats on the upper deck. I noticed that on the 747-8, F class section is at the nose of the 747 like most other carriers which offered First class on a B747.

If I remembered correctly, LH used to have a dedicated bed beside every seat on B744 F class after refurbishment, seems this design does not continue on the B747-8. Also, I was amazed by the LH lounge in FRA, the bathroom looks very pleasing compared to your average shower in an airline lounge. Overall, LH seemed to offer a solid product in F, comparable to TG/MH that in your previous installments of the report.

Once again, thanks for sharing your travel adventure with us!

Hi William,

A great close to your series!

The Lufthansa First lounge looks fantastic, and those bathrooms are really nice, sure a far cry from LHR. I have read before that the First lounge has an incredible selection of fine whiskies, which had me salivating when I read the menu!

On the other hand, I was somewhat underwhelmed by the flight itself. I have heard poor reviews of LH J, and unfortunately this report didn't do much to change my opinion. BA F and CX J looked better from your reports. If you don't mind me asking, how did you find the airlines comparatively rated from your experience?

A heartfelt thanks for compiling this stunning series. I have truly enjoyed every minute of it, so thank you for taking us along with you. While everywhere you went in Australia are places that I've never been to, I'm really glad that you enjoyed your time here. The photography that accompanied your destinations was stunning, and your reports were both educational and interesting, with a dash of humour on the side. As far as I know I haven't followed your reports before, but from now on I will be sure to keep an eye out for your future travels.

Happy flying,
Alex

An excellent TR. LH is one of our options next year to use to and within Europe so it's great to see their service and cabin up close. Flying LH last summer within Europe was great even though it was on the A321. Great information and thanks so much for sharing.

The only disappointing thing about this trip report is that it's the last one in your series!

One question: LH supposedly had Boeing install additional sound deadening material in the walls of the 748i F cabin.
Would you say that the space was appropriately quiet?

Hi!

Nice TR!
Thank you very much.
But can somebody please explain why there are always crackers served with cheese? That's something i was pondering about already a long time. Why no fresh multigrain bread for example?

Thank you and keep up the good work!

Hi knightsofmalta,

So this is the last part of your Australian series which I followed and enjoyed very much! While the B748 should be a nice addition to your probably impressive log I cannot help but feel that this LH 1st class experience is a bit underwhelming. Especially if you see what the Asian carriers have to offer on their A380 cabins in terms of space, comfort and extras.

Wow...thank you for the report on one of my favourite aircraft. Always love the B747. Until today, I still believe that the nose section of the B747 is the best area to put your F class cabin. Too bad not too many airlines are now operating B747 anymore and the rate that B748 has been selling, I don't have high hopes to see more if this aircraft in the future.

LH's F is indeed lacking privacy but is tastefully done and designed. The F lounge in FRA is beautiful and I do like the spacious bathroom in there.

Personally I think it does make more sense to have the First Class cabin downstairs, in the nose of the plane. First of all, because you don't have the human traffic of the crew walking in and out of the cockpit. Secondly, I really do think that carting your baggage through the Business Class section and then having to climb those steep stairs is not very classy at all. And thirdly, there is so much more storage space downstairs.

The bed on the -400 was never intended to be introduced on the entire fleet I think. From what I understand, when they decided to refurbish the -400s, they decided to keep First Class upstairs, but just a single seat on each side of the aisle would have been a bit of a waste of space.

Yes, they do have quite a few whiskies. I had a closer look at them, but I'm not the expert.

Quoting RyanairGuru (Reply 2):
On the other hand, I was somewhat underwhelmed by the flight itself.

You're not the only one. I left that flight with a bit of an identity crisis. I kept wondering if the flight really was just so mediocre, or if perhaps it was me and I've just become blazé. I don't think I am, otherwise I wouldn't have been quite so excited before the Malaysia Airlines and Thai Airways flights.

Quoting RyanairGuru (Reply 2):
BA F and CX J looked better from your reports. If you don't mind me asking, how did you find the airlines comparatively rated from your experience?

I'd say Cathay Pacific is definitely the star. I really don't have anything I could fault them with, except perhaps the ungodly hour of departure. But I could have chosen the night flight, so that's hardly an argument. It's not just that Cathay were flawless, they were flawless on a very high level. Second place would go to BA I'd say, for the stunning design of the cabin and the divine set of dishes they served. So tasty. I think third place would be Malaysia, because they have such a lovely cabin and such excellent staff.

If I'm not mistaken, the seven sisters and variations thereof exist in many different cultures. But the story as the Aborigines tell it has something very melancholic about it.

Thanks a lot, I really appreciated that! As for Australia, What's not to like? As far as I can tell the country has so much to offer. And the people are just so cool. Very welcoming and laid back.

I think Lufthansa is always a good and reliable option to take. Just one thing though, if you can avoid Frankfurt and fly through Munich instead, do it. Frankfurt is just too big. It's like a permanent mess.

Would you say that the space was appropriately quiet?

Definitely. Initially I thought we may have a technical problem because we pushed back and you literally couldn't hear the engines at all. It was only when we accelerated for take-off that you could finally faintly hear the sound of the engines.

I think the crackers and cheese is a very English thing and therefore probably more common around the world. Although personally I always enjoy the pear bread they serve on SWISS with the cheese.

I'll do by best. Quite unusually I'll be one the ground for a whole month before my next trip.

Hey William

Great final part of the report, and interesting to see the 748 in the log.
It looks like LH came a long way with their F class, but still not on par with it's asian counterparts.

Hi William,

So the last one in this great series you provided for us! Taking the 748 back to Europe in F truly is a great way to end this epic trip!
Although you say LH has improved some stuff on their F product, it still doesn't look as impressive as the Asian airlines. But hey, who am I to judge about that?
Nevertheless the food looks delicious and nice to see you were able to catch some sleep!

Thanks for putting this whole series of reports together William, I enjoyed every one of them. Such a great routing and variety of airlines and types, well done

cheers,

Brendan

The seat is certainly a vast improvement over what they had before. But the overall experience was a bit lacking in...something.

Actually I wasn't sure it would be the -8 until I arrived at check-in. When I arrived in HKG two days earlier from Perth, the Lufthansa had landed just ahead of us and I was mortified to see it was a -400. But apparently that was just a technical sub.

Hey knightsofmalta !

Very nice report of your LH First Class flight to FRA !
I am impressed every time I read something about LHs Fclass, I think it is one of the best Fclasses, well Ive never been on an longhaul Fclass seat but I think so   Also the Fclass ground service, lounges etc. of LH looks really great in FRA, did they drive you in a private car to the aircrft to Basel ?
Also the food looks good!

Thanks for the report

Hi William,

very interesting last part of your amazing series! I read with special interest because I was supposed to fly in 1K on D-ABYG some months ago, but had to cancel the trip less than 24 hours before departure.

Honestly, just like others, I'm a but disappointed by LH's flagship product after seeing in detail what TG, MH and others have to offer in First. What I found particularly irritiating was the catering - several items/plates didn't look overly impressive.

Quoting knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
For another, I always find it a bit iffy that a First Class passenger – once on board – should have to schlepp his luggage through the Business Class cabin and then up those stairs.

Well, would the crew assist if asked?

Quoting knightsofmalta (Thread starter):

On the downside, the cabin down here seems more cramped and less intimate. I am on 1K, which is in the tip of the beast’s nose, where the curvature is most pronounced. The proximity here to 1A is a bit too close for me.

I wasn't too concerned about that because my travel partner would have been in 1A. But I guess it can be uncomfortable to be so close to a stranger. And it could even become diffcult if that person didn't like trip reporters and their habits, e.g. taking pictures of everything...

Quoting knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
Generally speaking, one thing that has always bothered me with Lufthansa, is the complete lack of privacy in First Class. There is of course a screen that can be raised. But even so, compared to the seat Malaysian has on the A 380, you’re still quite exposed as a passenger.

Good point. I was wondering for a while which seat would be the one to enjoy most privacy. I selected 2K and 3K for us initially before moving to 1A & K.

What I'm really concerned about after the annoyances on my KLM 744 flight is the air conditioning system on Lufthansa's 748. On other sites I have recently read numerous complaints about the 748 - some people report about freezing cold temperatures in F Class and others say that you can feel a permanent airflow while seated in F Class. Can you confirm that? What was your impression? And how did it compare to the 744 First on the upper deck?

Quoting knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
It looks just as boring as the previous one to be honest.

I can only agree. The Bulgari Business Class amenity kit I got on Emirates looks much more exclusive.

Quoting knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
This is followed by a selection of cheese with bread and toast.

At least they served real "Semmeln".

Quoting knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
I am delighted to see that Lufthansa has finally decided to improve its catering on shorthaul regional routes: instead of those fully disposable plastic and cardboard trays, this meal here is served on real crockery, with real cutlery. And it even tastes good. So well done for that Lufthansa.

That tray looks very nice. I got a very nice breakfast in C on a VIE-MUC hop some weeks ago.

So I make my way to the First Class lounge. First thing I do, is have a shower. Perhaps I should send these to British Airways...

Great report! Thanks so much for that - it looks very good!

The shower room has a BATH! Now that has impressed me immensely   I wish I could give that a go sometime!

Hi William, great to read the final installment of your series. LH look pretty good on both sectors - especially the Euro one actually where I could have confused the meal for a long haul offering.

Good that you got to log the 748 too - one I'd like to try sometime. Being quite new though, I'd imagine I have quite a bit of time. Shame it's only LH that operate them really, not that I've got anything against them - just be nice to have a few more options!

Hello Mr.Knightsofmalta
Once again a fine trip report from you.
1K on the queen of the sky 2.0, gotta love it.
Food looks nice though everything does look oily to me.
But I guess they have to make it that way otherwise food will be too dry.
May I ask what Champagne did they serve? You don't drink alcohol, do you?
Many thanks for sharing.
Brgds,

Hello William,

Thanks very much for sharing. First Class with LH really looks wonderful and there is aparently not too much that they can improve, at least the way you described it.

Hi Emek96

Quoting Emek96 (Reply 12):
I am impressed every time I read something about LHs Fclass, I think it is one of the best Fclasses, well Ive never been on an longhaul Fclass seat but I think so

As far as the ground product is concerned I would certainly have to agree with you. The product on board the aircraft is certainly great as well, but I think the Asian carriers outshine Lufthansa in that respect.

Quoting Emek96 (Reply 12):
did they drive you in a private car to the aircrft to Basel ?

Well semi-private. There were another two gentlemen in the car. It was one of those Mercedes vans.

Hi Udo

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 13):
I read with special interest because I was supposed to fly in 1K on D-ABYG some months ago, but had to cancel the trip less than 24 hours before departure.

I'm sorry to hear that. Must have been frustrating. We're you able to find suitable new dates or did you have to cancel altogether?

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 13):
I'm a but disappointed by LH's flagship product after seeing in detail what TG, MH and others have to offer in First. What I found particularly irritiating was the catering - several items/plates didn't look overly impressive.

Catering is a bit of an issue with Lufthansa in First I must admit. Some of the dishes they've had on the menu, also on other flights, were just too complicated, if you know what I mean.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 13):
Well, would the crew assist if asked?

Well, probably they would. But that's not the point I don't think.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 13):
I wasn't too concerned about that because my travel partner would have been in 1A. But I guess it can be uncomfortable to be so close to a stranger. And it could even become diffcult if that person didn't like trip reporters and their habits, e.g. taking pictures of everything...

Well, you could always raise the screen for the photos, I guess.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 13):
Good point. I was wondering for a while which seat would be the one to enjoy most privacy. I selected 2K and 3K for us initially before moving to 1A & K.

Actually, row 2 must be the worst seat in the First Class cabin because you're abeam with the bar where they have all their drinks and stuff for the service.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 13):
What I'm really concerned about after the annoyances on my KLM 744 flight is the air conditioning system on Lufthansa's 748. On other sites I have recently read numerous complaints about the 748 - some people report about freezing cold temperatures in F Class and others say that you can feel a permanent airflow while seated in F Class. Can you confirm that? What was your impression? And how did it compare to the 744 First on the upper deck?

I couldn't feel the ventilation but the temperature certainly was a problem. Initially I was so cold I had to ask for a blanket. Then if became very hot and then cooled down again. I think the 744 was better in that respect, simply because I didn't notice anything in particular about the temperature/ventilation.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 13):
I can only agree. The Bulgari Business Class amenity kit I got on Emirates looks much more exclusive.

I just don't understand why they couldn't have kept those Rimowa ones. They were really cool.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 13):
That tray looks very nice. I got a very nice breakfast in C on a VIE-MUC hop some weeks ago.

Yes, certainly a vast improvement.

Quoting ClassicLover (Reply 14):
The shower room has a BATH! Now that has impressed me immensely I wish I could give that a go sometime!

Actually I don't think all the rooms have a bath. What I didn't check is if there's a rubber ducky like in the First Class terminal.

Hi James

I really liked the meal on that flight. It served its purpose and it was nicely presented.

That's what I thought, too!

Quoting nethkt (Reply 16):

As you say, I rarely drink alcohol on a plane. To be honest I don't think I ever even looked at the menu.

Finally! Recognition at last! But it's okay, I'm the silent type who suffers in silence...And thanks, glad to hear you liked the reports.

I'll do my best!

Well, perhaps there is a thing or two. But certainly nothing major.

Thanks to all for taking the time to comment!

Cheers,
William
