Sunshine in BURUNDI? Kenya Airways to LHR via CPT - Premier World (J)

Sun Dec 31, 2017 4:33 pm

Hello fellow A.netters,

To be honest with you, I did not intend to publish this report, however, the nice comment posted by fellow member 345tas on my previous TR, suggested otherwise:

RwandAir flagships:WB701 London to Kigali, A330-300 in Business Class

345tas wrote:
Great detailed report. Surely they are going to kill the BRU-LGW tag if that's the loads they are getting?

Would be great to see pics from Burundi, too.

So let's have a deeper look into what you've clicked for :)

THE CONTEXT

Burundi, the tiny landlocked country in Central East Africa, faced a deep political crisis back in 2015. Being based in Kigali – Rwanda at that time, I had to cancel a trip to the capital city, Bujumbura, one week only before protests, violence, fear, socio-economic decline and deepening social fractures characterised the beginning of the President’s third term in July 2015.

Rwanda expelled more than 1500 burundians after they refused to be moved to refugee camps. The crackdown followed a period of Rwandans being expelled from Burundi since April 2015, when Burundi’s political crisis exploded.

Bujumbura maintaining its accusations of meddling against its neighbour sparked the diplomatic row. Burundi’s president accuses Rwanda of supporting the rebels fighting against his government. Hence Burundians often look askance at Rwandan citizens (like myself) when traveling to its twin country.

Time to stop buying the blah blah that some western medias want us to believe and debunk some misconceptions that harm badly the image of this fragile nation.

While claiming miles online, a funny coincidence showed that my 100th flight with Kenya Airways occurred in June too, during the memorable NBO – CPT sector.

For your pleasure, this trip report unfolds these highlights:

1/ A glimpse of Bujumbura city and enchanting Burundi.
2/ Bujumbura – Kigali – Nairobi, KQ in Y & RwandAir in J.
3/ The Simba Lounge, T1A Nairobi airport.
4/ Nairobi – Cape Town – Nairobi, nifty souvenirs for the 100th with KQ in J.
5/ KQ's flagship Pride Lounge, T1A Nairobi airport.
6/ Nairobi – London, KQ in J.

DISCLAIMER

If aviation related photos are all from a trip in June, non aviation pictures were taken on three different occasions this year, using different equipments. Thus I would like to apologize for the inconsistent quality.

PART I: Bujumbura city and the country of the southernmost source of the Nile River

Except during a compulsory business trip, any visitor should avoid staying at the too overrated Hotel Club du Lac Tanganyika, not centrally located and lacking of genuine African ambience.

The best kept secret residence lies on the lakeside at Kabondo area (near the pitch where the current president likes to play/train twice weekly):

The hotel Safari Gate in the city center and near a western standards hospital, offers rooms ranging from usd 60 to usd 200 for suites, a 24h/7 security, 2 nice pools, a fitness center, 2 restaurants, meeting rooms and an excellent customer service.

If you want to swim nearby (a 3 min car drive or 15 min walk), the public beach at the end of Avenue de la Plage next to the (quiet) harbour will satisfy your urgent need, especially with young children.

If you are not yet tired of moving around, 200 meters away from this great boutique hotel, one can find the Musée Vivant (Living Museum). Entrance fee will cost you a ridiculous BIF 10 000 pp to spend a couple of hours or half a day here. (Bank/official rates: 1 usd/eur =BIF 1750/2060, forex/black market rates: 1 usd/eur = BIF 2700/3100).

Although being one of the main tourist attraction in Bujumbura, unfortunately it is almost neglected. Several species of animals have disappeared and are not replaced. The space is very small because they rely mostly on foreign donors and funds. Thus, this worldwide call to anyone who is willing to send animals or, for a good cause, invest her/his precious time or more to rehabilitate this dusty but well governed institution.

While temperatures are still warm, why not keeping on walking further north at an average pace?
You reach already the city centre after 15 min. Unlike Kigali or Kampala, moto taxi (or reckless boda boda), three-wheeler Bajaj and bicycles are not allowed to circulate in city centre.

So, if you want to get around outside the center, head off to main bus station at the central market where the good network links the outskirts of the town.

History and architecture wise, welcome to a crossroad with lots of trouble in the past. Most symbols honor short term local presidents, friendly nations which help the country or European grand influence. Coupled with the Kenyan and Congolese visitors, that makes a surprising mix.

Welcome to the Rusizi National Park
Image

At the time of visiting, half of park was closed off for improvements, to be completed next year (2019).
It costs only usd 30 pp with a private guide to get in (or equivalent in the local currency at the beneficial bank rate, not the black market rate, as managed by the government)
Image

Professional and knowledgeable staff provide you binoculars and suggest some itineraries according to your interests or animal movements.
Image

You can cruise upstream or downstream Rusizi river, the entire boat, for only usd 100 (same rate as above in local currency). FYI as the natural border, this small important river splits Rwanda and DR of Congo plus Burundi and DR of Congo.
Image

Image

Pont de la Concorde! Well, it reminds me something in Paris – France :)
Image

Unfortunately, on the half of the park allowed; with my crappy pos camera, only hippos – again (you must be fed up of them now lol) could be caught. Antelopes, crocodiles and birds were only visible through the binoculars.

Gitega, the 2nd largest city located exactly in the middle of the country, is also a tourist destination on its own for a couple of days or even three. The mild climate and the few attractions make it a pleasant city. One should definitely visit the National Museum, the German boma, Tambourinaires (Drummers)... etc...
This time though, it was just a transit point before going to the south in the Rutana Province!

The main goal you should have in mind for coming to Rutana is undoubtly to see the White Nile river source, that joins later the Blue Nile river in Khartoum – Sudan.
As there are still no indication/roadsign, you need a vehicle (preferably a 4wd) and a guide to reach there, after a short 20 min drive from Rutana town. Of course other natural beauties must not be skipped.

All in all, many interesting places to keep you busy for at least a full week. My next 3 must do are doubtless:

- Admiring a live performance of the UNESCO recognized drummers (Tambourinaires) ,
- Exploring the Kibira National Park,
- Hiking the German Fault near the Tanzanian border,
- Bathing in the newly built Mugara Hot Springs infrastructures

Concerning the vibrant nightlife, when you fancy going out, various respectable spots are dotted in cluster at the sort of CBD. Be ready to lots of Congolese influences. The struggle you will have is to make up your mind on the place to choose... ;)

The French Cultural Center or Institut Français du Burundi holds weekly a few appealing events, one of them was for the yearly launch of the Beaujolais Nouveau red wine (always crap, if you ask me..) the 3rd thurday of November. A party in Bujumbura was organized, while we were there, so we had to give it a try.

Many activities, attractions and shows, such as the sublime Choir of Bujumbura performing international songs ( in dire need of support/sponsor to level up their talent if you can/wish to help them financially or with your skills).

An official version of this photo is available here ( you can aslo see yours truly) .

As Nelly Furtado sings, all good things come to an end...
A stop at Kigali was compulsory in order to drop some belongings.

Kenya Airways 5th freedom hop between BJM – KGL is rather convenient. Indeed, it saves from a time consuming 9h bus journey (not direct & non stop anymore since Burundi barred transport vehicles from crossing the border into Rwanda in August 2016).

Low flying altitude (18000 ft max) allows amazing views to the countryside. Flight duration (20 mins) prevents the crew from serving a round of drink/snack.

Myself, instead of going straight back to France from Kigali, I decided to secure the SkyTeam Elite Plus status (Flying Blue Gold) another year by trying KQ's new route to the Mother City via both sides of the Victoria Falls.

RwandAir had planned to open its own premium lounge back in May 2017, for the London Gatwick inaugural thus I had bought a flight combining WB/KQ. Unfortunately for me, the outset of this place has been postponed until Q2 next year. Anyway, Skytrax award of 4th Best Regional Airline in Africa is totally deserved for 2017:

Transit in Nairobi was quiet a pain. The dedicated arrival terminal T1E is not suitable for transfers and did not have any sign to show directions. Even JKIA staff were clueless on where to connect to the international terminal without going through the immigration posts. On the very far left side, a hidden door to a staircase leads to a security scan. Then you have to cruise to the other side of the circle shaped terminal T1 after passing another X ray scan.

Skyteam premium travellers can chill out into two lounges (well, technically three, if you include the one located at gate 6 in T2C). Between 5.30am and 8 am and/or 8pm to 11pm, in order to avoid the crowd, an advice for any traveller having a late night flight:

Please make yourself comfortable at the 2nd (read new) Simba Lounge located at the main atrium upstairs near the Sheri Palm Spa as it's always quieter and cosier than KQ's flagship Pride lounge. It closes at midnight after the Asian/CDG flights and displays the same food & drink/view/smoking room also a specific lounge that can be privatize for parties/functions or where you can watch live sport games but less equipments (Showers and tablets).

Have a look at it:

The first part to Cape Town happened to be uneventful, following the tasty breakfast served by the kind crew Joseph, I sporadically dozed off up to Livingstone – Zambia. C cabin was 83% full.
3 travellers in C got off at LVI, none joined us for maybe 30 pax in Y.

Soon after take off from runway 10, cockpit crew rewarded all customers from choosing Kenya Airways. For my 100th flight, what a great present! Thank you very much!

Instead of keeping flying south, announcement from the flight deck stated the VicFalls visible for those seated on the right hand side. But to avoid any "jealousy", they decided to fly the plane over the falls twice (one for each side of the plane)... What a stunning scenic moment, moreover free of charge! I'm not sure how can they get such authorization with their flight plan but, everyone onboard enjoyed very much the show, phones and cameras at hand.

(There are about 80 pictures and 3 videos, so here is only a light sample LOL)

Landing on time, no wait at the immigration and I went to pick up the rental car.

Cape Town is one of my favorite city on the continent. Despite having being there twice, I could never to go to the top of Table Mountain due to either lack of time or bad weather conditions. Glad this time I could make it.

I stayed one night at the comfortable and modern Hotel Park Inn by Radisson Cape Town Newlands which offered a no brainer deal at €32 per night/no breakfast...(usually one can expect 90 -150 euro per night in many locations worldwide).

Finally, I've made it to the top of Table Mountain – yeah!

Interesting! Nice to see a report from deep core Africa! So vibrant. Will you ever plan to visit DRC? Once I was planning to cross in to Goma from Gisenyi, and go overland to Kisangani... but after what I saw floating on Lake Kivu and suddenly my camera mysteriously stopped operating, I had to cancel the plan. Interestingly, leaving Gisenyi back to Kigali, my camera started working again! Sorry for the ramble... Hope I could make it back to Africa soon. Looking forward in reading your flight journey! Thanks for sharing the photos.

After returning the rental car at Hertz office, (which fooled me because they added some obscure charges and included a fee for filling up the tank which I nonetheless did it – with the BP petrol station receipt prior handing over the key), I walked to the upper level at the check in area. The friendly SA contracted staff tagged the luggage up to Montpellier instead of, as per the booking, Paris CDG.

Like JNB, most intercontinental flights depart in the evening, so only the domestic screening was busy. In no time airside, I stocked up on delicious biltong snacks and headed off to the multi airlines Bidvest Lounge located at the mezzanine, where a delayed EK fustrated premium passengers inside.

Boarding process began on time, but we were put on hold for a while inside the jetbridge.
Apparently, a one off B738 was scheduled on that route in August 2017, otherwise be ready to endure 7h in an Embraer 190.
Exactly the same crew as the eve, so warm and personalized welcome! 50% LF in J and 80% in Y..
We took off 30 minutes behind the schedule for unknown reason.
Immediately after Wayingu took the lunch order and distributed the rudimentary headphones.

As a venerable armchairs aviation expert, without any official figures and purely based on observing the 4 sectors loads like many A.net myths, I can conclude that this route is performing pretty well! ;)

As you can watch on the footage, Captain Keyra and his mate worked wonders with the free Flight of Angel as a gift like yesterday! So please folks, share your experiences if you too have flown KQ recently on that route, did you get free loops above the Mosi Oa Tunya?

Service wise it was a certified copy of the previous leg.

Sarah, one of the crew, asked a service related question to a Chinese guy something like if he wanted a drink or anything else after the dinner. The customer, who seemed totally lost/confused, rushed instantly to the Y cabin. 3 minutes later he pointed out to the staff his Chinese colleague. The latter did the interpreter for both parties to get a cup of tea for his alleged boss. I found amusing the puzzled crew face during the "long" minutes of his disappearance!

The downside of willing to experience the new London timetable appears on the longish lay over of 10h at JKIA. (Technically half way between CPT – VFA , I was already requalified as Flying Blue Gold).

At closing time of the nice Simba Lounge, I made my way to KQ's flagship lounge – open 24/7 to settle down and starting writing this TR. Every now and then, a break needed to buy trendy African stuffs including sandals, mine were near to death.

When I left the Pride Lounge to buy the sandals, mostly NBO/KQ staff strolled there, either for cleaning or for resting/break time. They were all polite and quiet so not a big deal!

Near gate 15, a coloured old tired man, holding a BP in his hand, was begging in French everyone passing by if he/she could assist him. Like in many streets of this world, most of people ignored him, in this case, mainly due to the language barrier, I presume.

Initially, I paid little to no attention to his request and showed him the direction of the infos desk not to far.
However, having 8h to spare before KQ100, intrigued by this "Mzee", he told me that he nor his wife – sitting on one of the bench nearby – could speak any English word properly. (Mine is lackustre though)!

Basically, after visiting their oldest daughter, studying in Roma, their return journey with the clowns at Ethiopian Airlines was a comedy of errors. Tuth be told, they were living a nightmare and were stucked here with no information and no assistance!

They departed FCO with a 2h delay for technical issue and were told by the staff in Italy that everything should be all right for the rest of the trip to Madagascar (TNR). Upon landing at ADD, as the pilots could not make up the delay, they missed the connecting flight and were told they would be rebooked on the horribly late evening flight, which finally got cancelled by ET due operational reasons!?!

Stranded in ADD in a miserable position for their venerable age plus with no option to choose from, an ET agent suggested a midday flight to NBO and then the KQ option to TNR, forcing them to endure a 53h trip including this long wait at NBO... It was extremely shocking the way Ethiopian treat passengers in case of IRROPS, let alone the elderly people! To add insult to injury, they had not received any food/drink or zero assistance since they arrived in NBO.

Honestly, I could not believe my ears/eyes until I felt obliged to help them!

Now It sheds light on why ET suggests so very attractive fares if customer service is so crap! Think twice before booking with Ethiopian. In case of you are clearly left on your own somewhere far from your homecountry :-( .

Admittedly, it was not a piece of cake to solve their tricky situation. While waiting for positive answers, the retired Police officer ("Gendarme" in accurate French) obviously revealed me that Ethiopian Airlines sucks from A to Z and they will never fly again with them. And he was 110% right. I explained them about the EC261/2004 compensation (when we exchanged mails last November, without hope they were still waiting for an answer from ET) and the fact they should expect food & drinks and eventually accomodation during long lay over.

KQ staff, especially Lavy, handled perfectly the issue on behalf of indifferent and apathetic ET staffs, that clearly showed no sign of interest of their problem. The worst thing is that 30 other travellers got the same issues as this couple, but people started getting upset to KQ staff that had nothing to do with the orign of the problem in ADD & Ethiopian...! (sigh).

This innocent elderly couple was granted a much needed invitation to the foremost KQ Simba lounge ( unfortunately no shower for them) opposite to the Government and/or smoking Lounge at gate 6 that seemed to be the strict minimum they should have been allowed now and even hours before. We shared a last drink at 3.30am (yup, you read correctly, 2.5 long hours to find a suitable solution) and I made sure that their luggages would follow them on the flight and they would report on time at 8.30 am first at the transfer desk to check the gate and then will be directed to the correct flight.

After a quick search with the tool, I believe this the first report covering both lounges in NBO.

By the way, don't be shy to visit there, especially if you are on a night lay over, subject to availability, anyone can enter here or to the Simba one after paying a small fee of usd 40.

At 5 am, the morning wave of pax started flowing into the spacious lounge but got quickly crammed.
NBO staff set up the breakfast buffet for the arriving passengers. To catch forty winks I settled down on the one and only place you can view arriving/departing traffic, at the right after the lounge entrance... Just in case!

1h pior departure, the boarding gate almost deserted would predict a light load.
Heck no way, the jetbridge being jam packed meant that the British clients inconsciously endorse the Ryanair attitude by anticipating boarding ??

At the time of writing, except the BKK-HKG-BKK sectors (now axed), all intercontinental flights were nearly full in both cabins in 2017. For the best of East Africa and Kenya!

For British travellers, a few years ago Virgin Atlantic was scheduling from Nairobi a morning departure that allowed also great views all the way. One could glimpse the magnificient Mount Kenya outside!

The breakfast menu was handed over and the windows were not darkened at once quickly by the crew which was reassuring!
Next to me, the Norwegian lady dived into bed after breakfast main course.
After a quick cabin tour, only 7 min afterwards I imitated her for an impressive 4h deep sleep.

Waking up over Egypt, time to continue the job, at 1pm UK time.
The "incredible" news was the onboard bar set up, 3rd time to see it out 8 flights on their Dream)liner (+1 on their 77W).
Actually, you can just tell your wish and the caring crew will bring over to your seat in no time! A perfect G&T to warm you up along with some cashew nuts (no photo sorry)!

The flight duration is slightly longer (20-30 min mostly due to circling over London ) than CDG/AMS, hence it was surprising to get a second hot meal served above the Greek Islands. It tasted great, I'm just disappointed because there are no choice anymore for starter, but if this cost cutting measure can turn the airline into profitability asap then, it's approved!

Ok, one of the main reasons to select KQ over the competitors, be them African or European, is their incredibly African music library. They certainly have the finest and trendiest especially with the East African, Naija and South African tunes.

The movie I tried to watch did not live up to the expectations but it did not matter as for once I got the best side to enjoy stunning views over Europe's finance capital!

FINAL THOUGHTS

1/ Burundi

Bujumbura is far from a rundown dirty city as one could think. Currently it's impressive the number of Police Officers, soldiers and armed force on the streets, hence security is enforced. Most (if not all?) Burundians are welcoming, friendly and... honest, I mean they are not trying to rip tourist off!
Werstern medias news and foreign travel advices must be taken with grain of salt. You now have the proof that traveling to Burundi is safe, and moreover, you'll enjoy your stay!

2/ Kenya Airways

My shuttles between Europe and Rwanda/Southern Africa over the years have been mainly focused on Kenya Airways.

Since the first flight in 2001, generously offered by my dad for being graduated cost 4000 French francs (EUR 800 at today's rate) on a CDG-AMS-NBO-CDG, where with my best pal we'd thoroughly enjoyed the most of delights of AMS during our layover, they are consistent and reliable.

Despite facing many challenges/competitors even from East Africa with RwandAir and soon Air Tanzania with its B787, they remain the one and only Pride Of Africa, even if sometimes small details are forgotten especially on continental services!

Surely, they might certainly not be the best carrier covering the globe, but they don't let you down if something unexpected happens !

As a simple conclusion, there are some of my stats with KQ right after that TR and 102 sectors (distances in miles) :

1/ Number of destinations travelled/total: 16/53 (30%)
AMS, BJM, CDG, CPT, DXB, EBB, HKG, HRE, JNB, KGL, KIS, LHR, LUN, LLW, NBO and MBA.

11 African destinations
Image

5 intercontinental routes
Image

1/ Most flown sector: Nairobi – Kigali (23/102) with a majority of KQ448 (9)
3/ Shortest leg flown: Kigali – Bujumbura, 110 miles
4/ Longest leg: HKG – NBO, 5427 miles
5/ Average/total distances: 1337 miles, like a NBO – FIH, meaning 6,2 times a round the world or 64% earth to the moon distance, translating into 336 hours nonstop spent in their tubes.
6/ Class of travel: 76 Y / 26J
7/ Aircrafts: E70/E90/733/737/738/767/772/77W/787 with mostly 737 all variants!
8/ Special liveries: EMB190 Skyteam (NBO – KIS), EMB190 - 900th from Embraer (KGL – NBO) so 50% (2/4)
9/ Fifth freedom sector: 1/9, Kigali – Bujumbura return, 7 times

FUN FACTS:

*Flights cancelled by KQ: 0 (= yes, Zero...)
*Scheduled flights changed by more than 30 min : 0 (Yes, exactly the same)
*Number of upgrade: 0/102 (albeit 2 with AF, 1 with Garuda)
*Diversion: 1/102 on a KGL-NBO via BJM, that landed at MBA instead.
*Celebrities: RwandAir CEO (January 2015), KQ's former CEO (November 2016)
*Liters of Tusker Lager drunk: 1,66 meaning 5 cans
*Liters of champagne: 4,7 or 6,26 bottles or 37,6 glasses

NB: The old couple landed at odd hours in Madagascar, with all their luggages on time. They sent a claim to ET for the insane delay in July, but so far apart from an automated answer, they haven't seen any apologies nor goodwill gesture from Ethiopian. (From the last discussion with them in November 2017)!

EDIT: At the 31st of December 2017, the updated figures show that now:

118 flights, including 2 generous upgrades... but for the rest of the stats, you will have to wait the 200th version of this report.

The very first upgrade from KQ.

Many thanks for reading until the end of this long trip report, hope you enjoyed!

Nice TR and good photos. Libya seems to be avoided by most European careers going to Los and SA airports and most seem to route through Tunisia.

This is my pet peeve on 787s. Most operators are dreadful at this. A big tick for KQ! I like the Simba paws on the socks too. As you say, Burundi is just another country, like anywhere you have to be aware of your surroundings and yourself. The same is true of many unfortunate nations around the world that have bee n deliberately tarnished by the media.

Bonjour EastAfSpot!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip report complete with fun photos and valuable information! And thank you, as always, for sharing these traveling journeys around Africa! Mérci!!!

I learned a few things from this trip report thanks to you:

+ Kenya Airways all-day!
+ Ethiopian Airlines like never!
+ Burundi for food, glorious food!
+ Air France l’espace Europe catering is still good!
+ Watch for wild animals (I have a fear of reptiles, so no zoo visits for me!)
+ Bujumbura is only 1-stop away from LAX!
+ Lager and crispy baby fish is totally my style! (From your food photos). I’m ordering that!!!
+ Don’t take Moto Taxi!
+ I want to learn more on how I can help financially to the aforementioned causes.

Now the travel business:

While mentioning in your report regarding SkyTeam Elite Plus retention, I thought of the recent mileage earnings devaluation from various Skyteam Programs and wondered to myself if status is worth attaining these days, as a whole.

Personally, I am happy as a Korean Air SKYPASS Member mainly for low mileage redemption rates in Prestige Class and First Class Cabin Awards to Asia; compared to the now-worthless Delta SkyMiles Membership I once had. For example, I spent 280,000 Delta SkyMiles (OFF-peak season!) for a LAX-ICN-LAX (via DTW) in DL Business Class versus 90,000 KE Business Class LAX-ICN-LAX (nonstop!) and both award seats were booked in off-peak season winter. But, I digress.

Bujumbura/Burundi/Africa:

Unfortunately, we as humans are quick to pass judgments on things we have little/no knowledge about due to fear of the unknown and media influence, for example.

I understand your point of view and I’m sorry you felt placed in a position to defend a locale; just the same as I have felt, on occasion, the need to defend the United States (where I was born) or even, North Korea (where my mother and her family were born).

As humans, we are fallible. By taking the extra time to share and create and educate the world with trip reports such as yours, you become vital in the process to correct false preconceived viewpoints on topics lesser-known.

Bon Courage! Mérci! Bonne Année!

Hello guys, thank you so much for the great comments

Interesting! Nice to see a report from deep core Africa! So vibrant. Will you ever plan to visit DRC? Once I was planning to cross in to Goma from Gisenyi, and go overland to Kisangani... but after what I saw floating on Lake Kivu and suddenly my camera mysteriously stopped operating, I had to cancel the plan. Interestingly, leaving Gisenyi back to Kigali, my camera started working again! Sorry for the ramble... Hope I could make it back to Africa soon. Looking forward in reading your flight journey! Thanks for sharing the photos.

First of all, thank you hirofumi for the comment you left on the DXB – KGL – DXB trip report. At the moment I was about to reply, the report had vanished from A.net for unknown reason thus I would like to apologize.

I wish one day to go to DRC to do the volcano hike and more, when exactly? Not sure. If you too are interested to visit there let me know! :)
Hmmm tell us more what did you see on the Lake Kivu? there is a famous legend about it too... :D

Thanks for reading and commenting aahammayo and the info.
Do you know the actual reason? because on a SN flight to East Africa, the path was identical to what you wrote...

Thank you for also stopping at this report aerorobnz,
When the destination is not in the same time zone or by more than 3 hours, I understand that some operators want the passengers to take a good rythm. But like in that case (NBO-LHR) it would have been ridiculous...
I see you speak kiswahili, well done ;)
You are so right about the power of the media. Kenya was in that case too a few years ago, after the (thankfully one off event) Westgate mall attack in Nairobi, And what about Zimbabwe..?

LOL, almost a perfect sum up. Congrats!
Don't get me wrong, ET is great airline only WHEN/IF there are no irrops....
It makes sense your fear for reptiles since the most dangerous snake, the boa constrictor, can only be found in your continent... hahaha
Yes, well theoritically, your home airport LAX is only 1-stop away from BJM, not with Brussels Airlines though but with its Star Alliance partner... Ethiopian (with a refueling stop in DUB).
These little fishes are staple food in Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia too but mostly cooked in a stew.
You are more than welcome to help, they will value very much your contribution – be it financially or technically. Would you prefer to start helping the Choir of Bujumbura or the Living Museum first? I can get in touch with the French Institute of Burundi for more info if you want, and will provide you extra details in PM.

Indeed, You are absolutely right (and no you are not off topic as this is an important part of the travel experience). Nowadays it's better to stick with whichever is cheaper/more convenient, since in general, air fares have drastically decreased for the past 10-20 years.

Flying Blue rules will change from the 1st of April (commonly known as FB April fool's since 2009 devaluation) for a revenue based program. If you fly J you don't need the Elite Plus benefits. If my calculations are correct with the new XP scheme it won't be too difficult to maintain this status, otherwise time comes for a change... ;)
Then the other problem will be redemptions, so far, apart from the dynamic pricing, we don't know yet how worse it will be to use the "phony money" called miles.
Interesting to learn about the Korean Air Skypass trick, thank you,I will have a look at it. US based airlines aren't known to be generous when it comes to FFP, that's why like you, many travellers have moved to other programs.

It must not be easy to defend North Korea so I applaud your determination!
Ok admittedly, Burundi is not a "heaven" like Singapore or Japan but not a war zone like Iraq or Syria neither; just everyone should use the common sense to avoid troubles here or anywhere in this world.
What fustrates me the most are the only bad news/images spread over all around the globe by some ignorant medias.
With the recent wave of terrorist attacks in the UK, France, Belgium and Germany plus USA having one of the highest crime rates in the world, why this tiny country would be more dangerous than some developed nations?

For example, in this country, general hotel occupancy rate dropped dramatically to a terrifying 10% in 2017, just to show you the horrible effects of the mass media influence :( .

So you should definitely come here to check with you own eyes and start reversing that nasty trend ;)

No problem, thanks for the reply! If you're planning for the volcano hike I'd definitely like to come! Travelling alone in DRC requires a lot of courage...

As for Lake Kivu, it wasn't something pleasant - at the time of my visit the war on the side was still going on and there was a body floating ashore tied up on a wooden cross. I wish I have seen the legend part! At that moment I realized how safe Rwanda was...

Happy New Year by the way, and what an awesome view after Livingstone departure! You've saved your helicopter tour fee at least ;). Great looking tiramisu (despite the fingerprint).

Hi Jeffrey1970, thanks a lot for your comments. For the moment Burundi is perceived for seasoned travellers to Africa/SA/SE Asia but nothing to worry about here.
Sooner or later, my bet is that KQ (Kenya Airways) will fly to the US since they are already approved by the FAA to do so... Atlanta or NYC? Not sure where to first

Just a small mistake commonly done by westerners:
"Air Kenya" refers to a (private) different airline here in East Africa, based at Nairobi's 2nd airport Wilson: https://www.airkenya.com/

Not a big deal though, hope you want to try BOTH of them :)

Hi Hirofumi
Interesting to read that, by the way a Kiwi forumers (Aerorobnz) may plan to go to DRC in May (along with Rwanda)... what do you think?

Jeeez for the body seen, OMG!!
Probably an opponent to the Kabila regime who drown accidentally because he/she didn't know how to swim... ;) .

Hahaha, yes indeed the helicopter fee was saved but a microlight flight over the falls was done in 2010 already, not as stunning as there though because we could not see properly the cities also...

My best wishes to you Hirofumi for this new year! Hope you will get many upgrades, first class and safe flights for free :)
