Etihad Business & Business Studio from Munich to Tokyo

Thu Oct 05, 2017 3:49 pm

Finally its Friday and time to step again into an airplane. Last checks, if all my belongings are in the suitcase and of corse, if the battery of the my camera is fully loaded. My wife and daughter are going to Berlin and we can use the complimentary Etihad Chauffeur Service together. Our pick up is on time and its in a brand new BMW 7 Series.

CHECK-IN AND BOARDING

Due to the convenient collaboration between Etihad and Lufthansa we all can use Munich’s Terminal 2. I drop off my luggage and we head to the security control. After spending some time with my family, I escort them to the Gate for their Lufthansa Flight. For me its also time to move through the Passport Control and got to my departure Gate. After some delay, the Boarding starts. First and Business Class Passengers are allowed to board the Airbus through door 1L. My seat for the Abu Dhabi Leg is 11A, a Window Seat in bigger Business Class Area (before Economy Class). I make oneself comfortable as it gets and recive my Pre Departure Champagne.

Plane: Airbus A330-300
First Flight: 28.07.2011
Reg.: A6-AFF
Seat: 11A

My Seat is locatedt next the Window and has a small access to the aisle. A big pillow and the blanket are underneath the Ottoman and ready to use. Our departure delays due Slot Problems. So a small bowl with warm Nuts will served and the Inflight Entertainment will be switched on. I use this time, to contact the Airberlin Service Desk to place my Upgrade Vouchers for my upcoming San Francisco Trip.

THE FLIGHT AND THE SERVICE

After getting the pushback clearance, our Airbus is about to leave the Gate for the Runway. Take-off thrust set and lift off! After leaving some turbulences behind us, its time for the First Gin Tonic and Menu for todays flight sounds well. I will try a Seared Tuna as a starter and a steamed Chicken Breast as a Main Course. The Chicken was succulent and very tasty. During the Meal a 2016 Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand was served. And last but not least I had a fantastic hot chocolat brownie for Dessert.

I watched the movie „Gone Girl“ and the seat was in the „Relax-Mode“. This seat had also a phenomenal Massage Function. The Crew was friendly, but not really motivated. So the refill of the Glasses was very slow. During the last Hours to Abu Dhabi, I ordered a Steak Sandwich an a Beer: Its getting dark outside and this flight comes to an end. The Airbus A330 parked at the taramac and the Passangers was droven by Busses to the Terminal.

ETHIAD TO TOKYO NARITA

I had to move really quickly to the transfer desk to pick up my new Boarding Pass. There was no time to visit the Etihad First Class Lounge, because Boarding to Tokyo was in progress. So, hurry up to the Gate. My Seat in this Dreamliner now was 6K, the small Business Class Compartment behind the First Class. I was really excited about the design of Etihad Business Studio. There is a small touchpad to control the Lights around the Seat and the remote control can show the flight map for example while you’re watching a movie. The IFE screen has a good size and a high resolution. The Dreamliner tooks his way to the runway. The acceleration was insane, it felt like an Audi RS 6 :-)

Plane: Boeing 787-9
First Flight: 23.06.2015
Reg.: A6-BLE
Seat: 6K

THE SERVICE AND THE FLIGHT

After reaching cruise altitude, I got new headphones, because mine was broken. So I used the time to order my first Gin Tonic and my Menu: Arrabic Mezze as a Starter and Tenderloin Beef with asparagus and potatoes. It was so delicious!! For dessert I had ice-cream and a cup of coffee. Before switching the seat into a bed, I watched a movie and had some Gin Tonic with Chips. At this time we are over Pakistan, 7 hrs 40 min to go.

At the end of Sherlock Holmes, its time to switch the seat into a bed. I fell a sleep for over 5 hrs and woke up during some turbulences over Beijng, the cabin is still in dark mode. A flight attendant came to me with some bad news, my luggage was left in Abu Dhabi. In my mind I was prepared for this situation. But now its time for a small Breakfast with Smoothie and scrambled eggs.

We landed at 12:20 am local time at Narita Airport and it took us some to taxi to our Gate. After deboarding, I got in touch with the Airport Ground stuff due to my luggage problem. I received 60 USD to shop some new cloths. After Immigration, I brought me a Ticket with the Narita Express to Shinjuku. Welcome to Japan!

Thanks for the report. Looking at the pictures in your link, it seems like Etihad offers a very competitive hard product. Were the crew friendly and attentive on your flight? How consistent is the service in your experience?
Thanks again.

Why are you capitalizing all the words? Pre Departure Drink isnt capitalized. Most of the words you use are not Capitalized/ should not be Capitalized. it's odd and Throws Me Off while reading.

Nouns are always capitalized in German. I had problems myself when I was learning the language with subsequently capitalizing nouns in English.

The Business Class product, especially the Business Studio is magnificent! But I have to say, that I was on 3 of 4 flights a bit disappointed from the Service, outgoing from my expectations, what Etihad has to deliver as a 5 Star Flag Carrier. A have missed "the extra mile"

That's unfortunate. I always feel like the attitude of the crew is a big component on the overall flight experience. It's a shame that Etihad didn't meet your expectations in this regard.

yes, that was a bid sad. Do you have experiences with Etihad? One of my best Business Class flights was surprisingly with American Airlines

No, I have never flown with Etihad, as most of my flying is Transatlantic, Domestic US and Intra-European.
American carriers tend to get a bad reputation, but my loyalty is with Delta/KLM/Air France. Of those three I have flown First/Business with Delta and KLM, and the service has always been excellent.

Oh that sounds good! After insolvency of airberlin, I am looking for some alternatives. They also offer a status match

I heard that Finnair is offering status match for Air Berlin. Are Air France/KLM doing the same?
Not knowing everything about your flying habits, I'm not sure what to recommend in terms of where to place your loyalty next. Having said that, Delta/KLM/Air France is always a solid choice, but so too is Lufthansa. I probably wouldn't go with Oneworld, because AA is a little hit and miss, and BA (who I suppose you'd have to use in Europe) have really been cheapening their product of late.
