Adelaide Ceduna Return Regional Express SAAB 340B

Wed Aug 30, 2017 11:30 am

This is another flight from my plan to fly to all airports served by Regional Express from Adelaide.
Started with Port Lincoln in 2014.
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=979567&p=13162479&hilit=Lincoln#p13162479

This trip was organised by my friend who is a pilot for Regional Express, and was rostered on to operate this flight to Ceduna, but he was taken off the flight a couple of days before, for a trainee first officer.

Saturday 26 August 2017
Adelaide (ADL) Ceduna (CED)

A quick and easy check in for this early morning flight. I was probably the first to check in.
Again security was quick and painless.

Once at gate 10, it was very quiet down at that end of the airport.
Looks like about 9 passengers on this flight.

The windows are still frosty.

This aircraft seems to have a few rattles in it.

Once a Qantas 737 had taken off was our turn. Took off on runway 23. Quite smooth take off.

Choice of snacks was either sweet or savory. Went for the savory. Tea, coffee or water was offered.

Flight time to Ceduna approx 1 hour 15 mins.

Very light turbulence here and there.

Cruising altitude 18000 feet.

Got a bit bumpy in places on approach to Ceduna, but landing was ok.

Again there was no mad rush for the door once the seatbelt sign was switched off. Everyone took their time. There does not seem to be a great hurry in the country.

ImageREXSAAB340B-VH-ZLR-63 by Ryan Hothersall, on FlickrCeduna is a small regional airport served by only one scheduled airline, so quite small.

Other aircraft seen were a Chinta Air Piper Chieftain and Wrights Air Cessna 206.

After a small issue with check in, where the computer seemed to say no to me being checked in, but mankind triumphed over machine and I got my boarding pass. By the time that was sorted out it was time to get back onto the plane for the return flight.

Only enough time for a few quick photos of the terminal.

As has been mentioned before, due to complaints about the original regional airline setup, shuttle busses are now used to shuttle passengers between the aircraft and terminal instead of the long hot (or cold) covered walk way, which be a very long walk if the aircraft is at the very last bay.

The bus now takes passengers from the aircraft to the old international terminal, where part of it is used by Regional Express for baggage reclaim.

A great morning out, another regional airport visited and another SAAB 340 flown on.

Hi Ryan.

It's good to see another of your regional reports online.

Rex offer a reasonable service and whenever I've flown with them the crew have been quite friendly.

Ha ha. That reminds me of an incident in Maree some years ago. We were staying at the caravan park there and heard an employee talking to the manager: "I wish this lot would fuque off so that I can get on with the cleaning." Good old country hospitality. :rotfl:

Great pics as usual. Always good to be able to take them on the apron.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Ryan,

Lots of fantastic photos in your report. Such a crazy thing flying off to nowhere for no reason other than the experience of the flight and looking out the window, but that's what we do.

Years ago I shared an office with a radio astronomer who did Very Long Baseline Interferometry observations. They combined radio telescopes from across Australia and internationally to make high resolution images of galaxies and the like in space. One of the telescopes was an old satellite base station in Ceduna which is now used by the University of Tasmania for astronomy. Of very little relevance to your report, but at least it's something about Ceduna!

Nice report, I fly with rex quite often myself in WA..they are usually pretty good!.interesting to see the interior differences between the models. In WA we only have the B+ models, which have a more modern interior, and possibly extended wingtips..
