It is time for a Japan trip again, taking advantage of the long weekend and a couple of days of vacation. This time, I would be going to a less visited part of Japan, Hakodate in the most southern part of Hokkaido, as well as Tokyo again. Flights were a combination of 4 airlines (Scoot, Vanilla Air, ANA and SQ) from budget to business, with my first flights on two of the airlines. Interestingly, SQ is the parent airlines of budget carrier Scoot, while ANA is the parent of the budget arm Vanilla Air.

First 2 sectors was on Scoot to Tokyo Narita via Bangkok. For a bit more comfort, I had chosen to fly in Scootbiz for the sectors. As this was not my first time on Scootbiz, I had totally knew what to expect and prepared all the necessary amenities to make my flight a comfortable one.

Checked in at Terminal 2 less than 1.5hr before departure at the shared Scootbiz/Tigerair premium counter. In less than a month's time, Tigerair Singapore would be subsumed under the Scoot brand and go into the history books.

Boarding was called very soon after entering the packed gate and we soon boarded the bus. Premium boarding is of no use here as everyone was packed onto the bus regardless of ScootBiz or Economy. However, this is one of the very rare times (other than propeller Firefly flights) that we got to board via a remote stand, and allowed me some photo opportunities. This would also be my first flight on the smaller B787-8 Dreamliner variant.








Welcomed by the crew and proceeded to my seat at 3A. The smaller B787-8 is only fitted with 21 ScootBiz seats, as compared to 35 seats on the B787-9.




A pre-cup water was offered, followed by the ScootBiz crew going aroud confirming our pre-ordered meals as well as drinks selection with the meal. ScootBiz pax are entitled to a drink selection, alcoholic included, from the drinks selection to go with the meal. Water is also free-of-charge on ScootBiz, but payable in Economy. Surprisingly, we were all addressed by our name on this flight by the crew serving in ScootBiz, which I had not encountered on my previous flights in ScootBiz. A tad of premium touch here! There was also a Japanese speaking crew onboard and all annoncements were in English and Japanese.




Seat pitch is a more than reasonable 38" for this mid-haul. Comparable to premium economy standards.

ScootBiz was half full on this SIN-DMK sector, but fully packed in Economy at the back. Boarding was completed late due to the bussing of passengers, which delayed the flight preparations. The pilot also came on to apologise for the delay due to the allocation of the remote stand.

The selection on ScooTV, the wifi-streaming IFE, was a disappointment though, with most movies being quite dated. Only the Asian selection were a bit newer.

Service started with distribution of immigration forms, followed by offering of ScooTV access codes to ScootBiz pax. ScooTV and power charging point are complimentary for ScootBiz, but again payable in Economy. Decided to watch a Korean movie using my own mobile device.




Meal was then served. We had pre-ordered the premium selection of Ayam Rendang with rice, which came with a side salad, Haagen Dazs ice-cream and a cup of water. I selected an orange juice for my drink of choice.

Chicken rendang with rice and curry vegetables. This is absolutely delicious! The dish is full of flavour, meat is tender and portion is big too. Easily one of the best inflight meals I had.




You can't go wrong with Haagen Dazs chocolate ice-cream.

We were cruising at a very high 43,000ft and the pilot managed to make up some time en-route. Spent the rest of the flight using ScooTV till descent into Don Muang.

Parked at the gate and the Scoot crew turned on the Dreamliner signature rainbow lights during disembarkation. What a sight! These were not turned on during my previous Scoot flights. Transit pax were also required to disembark with belongings and re-clear security.

After disembarkation, ground staff were at the end of the jetbridge calling out for transit passengers to Narita. Our passports were checked, names ticked off a list, given a transit card as well as a transit sticker. Noticed from the list that there were slightly more than 30 pax transiting to Narita.




Then it was a rather long walk to Transfer security where we were screened before allowing bck to the Departure level. The terminal was not too busy at this time of the night, with some shops and eateries also closed for the day.

Most passengers were already settling for the night.




Crew came around and asked us if we would like the meal right away or 2hrs before arrival. We requested for the meals to be served right away as we intend to rest for the rest of the flight. Pre-ordered the Beef brisket with polenta on this sector. Meal came with the same salad as previous meal (catered from SIN) but dessert was replaced with a cake. Ordered a coconut water with the meal.

Beef was tender and flavourful, but I am not a fan of polenta. Portion was big too. Definitely satisfying, but not as good as the Chicken Rendang on the previous sector.




My friend has pre-ordered the third Premium meal choice out of SIN, which is the Singapore Chicken Rice. Tasted fairly authentic and delicious as well.




After meals were cleared, cabin lights in ScootBiz were dimmed all the way till we started our descend. Even though a Buy-on-board service was again conducted in Economy about 2hrs prior to landing with full cabin lights on, us in ScootBiz were not disturbed with lights remaining dimmed.

Similar to DMK, the aerobridge was only attached to Door 2. My seat for the past 8hrs.

ScootBiz is definitely a very comfortable way to fly at very affordable prices. Luxury business class it may not be, but with the more spacious seat, accompanied with some frills, it really helped to make the mid-haul red-eye flight much more bearable.

As we had more than 3hrs of transit before the flight up to Hakodate, we grabbed some breakfast at one of the airport restaurants. I had a very delicious japanese style breakfast.




There is an open-air viewing gallery at the roof-top too! Great place for aviation enthusiasts to hang out.

Scoot seems to have nice catering and decent meals - sadly they are not up tu full flat like AirAsiaX, what a shame.

As my next flight is departing from Narita's Terminal 3, it was a 10min walk along the designated footpath from Terminal 2 to the LCC terminal. The LCCs must have been doing a roaring business at Narita as T3 seemed much more busier than T2. Looks like expansion of the current makeshift LCC terminal is needed sooner than later.






Vanilla Air's very basic self-check-in machines and baggage drop counters. The international counters are much busier than the domestic ones.

Vanilla Air, a wholely owned subsidiary of ANA, was formed when the AirAsia group pulled out of the joint investment with ANA on AirAsia Japan. This LCC is currently based at Narita, ans operated 12 A320s to a number of domestic and regional internation destinations.

Aircraft is fitted in the standard LCC configuration of 180 seats.

Disembarkation





It was a standard LCC experience on Vanilla Air, just getting you from Point A to B punctually and nothing more. Service is nothing more than the necessary but seat comfort was lacking with the tight legroom. However, still an acceptable experience on short hops.

Bags were out fast. No Vanilla Air logo on the signage yet, even though this daily flight was launched four months back.

From Hakodate Airport, it was only a 20min and 410yen airport limousine bus ride to the Hakodate JR station, which is also the main transport hub in the city center. Our hotel, Four Points by Sheration, is just across the road from the JR station. The hotel was officially opened under the Four Points brand just a month ago after a major facelift.




Rooms were decently sized and comfortable.

After a short rest, we walked to a nearby recommended eatery, Uni Murakami, for an early dinner. As the name suggests, the eatery is famous for its Uni (sea urchin) dishes. Everything we had were really fresh and tasty!








Took a leisurely stroll to the wharf and Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse after dinner.








Had some wonderfully light Petite Merveille cheesecakes and milk pudding.






It was rise and shine early the next morning to visit the famous Morning Market, which was just across the streets from our hotel.




It was seafood and melons galore at the market!














Seafood don for breakfast at one of the many eateries at the market. Due to the many eateries, the prices were very competitive.




Hakodate has a very convenient tram and bus network within the city which connects to all major sights. A day-pass for unlimited rides on the trams and buses can be bought for 1000yen.

Right across from the church is a Japanese Buddhist temple.




Walked back forn to the red brick warehouses for a light tea of Snaffle's cheesecakes. Just realised that Snaffle's actually originated from Hakodate!




As dusk falls, we took the Mountain Climbing bus up to Mt Hakodate, a must do when in Hakodate. The bus ride is included in the tram/bus day-pass. The view from Mt Hakodate is voted one of the best in the world, especially during the evenings. Thus, this explains the throngs of tourists at the peak during sunset, and this is not even the peak tourist season!












It got rather chilly at the peak at dusk. Hence, when we got down from the mountain, we went to Ajisai to try their recommended Hakodate styled ramen. Different from other japanese ramen, Hakodate-style ramen uses a salty clear soup base, and this ramen eatery produces one of the best examples in Hakodate.




We also had to try Lucky Pierrot, a famous burger chain found exclusively in Hakodate. We tried their top-seller burger and sundae, and both were great!






On the last morning, it was again a trip to the Morning Market for a dose of healthy breakfast before doing some last souvenir shopping and heading to the airport.

It was a 20min Airport Limousine Bus ride back to the airport from Hakodate JR station. Reached the airport domestic terminal 1.5hrs prior to departure. The international terminal 5min walk down the road. It is smaller and seperated from the domestic terminal

There are no dedicated check-in counters for ANA's premium pax at Hakodate, unlike the other major airports. Luckily the check-in and baggage drop queue moved fast. There are also no dedicated ANA lounges here. Hence maybe that explains the lower Premium Class fares from Hakodate, which is only 5000yen more than economy, inclusive of 40kg luggage, 125% miles and the full Premium Class experience onboard.

There is a huge shopping area above the check-in hall before security, offering all the usual Hakodate and Hokkaido snacks and souvenirs.








As with almost all Japanese airports, there is an open-air viewing gallery. Hakodate is definitely not a very busy airport.

Domestic security was swift but for some reason, we were provided with another boarding pass-like slip to indicate that security was cleared.

As expected in Japan, boarding was very orderly and priorities were strictly followed.








Was wamly welcomed by the ANA crew upon boarding. ANA's domestic B772s are fitted with 21 Premium Class seats (equivalent of domestic business class)in 2-3-2 configuration in the Premium Class cabin. The crew serving our aisle also introduced herself and informed that she would be taking care of us on this flight. Really personalised service on my first ANA experience and this is the start of the really awesome ANA service on this very short flight. Lets see if ANA deserves its 2nd World's Best Cabin Crew award (according to Skytrax 2017).

Mechanical seat controls for the recline, leg and foot rests. The seat slides forward to recline instead of the conventional recline method. It is not a lie flat but more than sufficient for the domestic sectors that this aircraft is deployed on.

The flight attendant, upon realising that we were not Japanese, offered either English or Chinese newspapers for our reading pleasure. We chose the English papers.




Leg room is very generous. A pair of slippers and headphones were available in the magazine compartment. IFE is limited to radio channels and short features shown oon the monitors.

Service started immediately after seatbelt signs were turned off. 3 flight attendants were serving in Premium Class today.

On this noon flight, the Premium Gozen meal was offered along with the full range of beverages. The crew described the meal while offering it, and also offered miso soup to go with the meal. I also ordered a shochu with ice and apple juice. A packaged wet cloth towel was also provided.




The meal was served at room temperature, and comprises of 2 beautifully arranged bento boxes.




This first bento consisted of salmon, omelette and various side dishes.




The second bento box was grilled chicken with rice. All the items were very tasty!

After we were done with our meal, the crew immediately collected the meal trays, and came back with another tray to offer rice crackers and mixed nuts. We were also asked if we would like any more drinks. Awesome service!




We asked the crew if they have any postcards or memorables, and the very nice crew came back with sets of 4 different postcards for us to choose from! I had one of each design for keepsake.

Just when we started our descend, the crew came round again and ask if we would like coffee or tea. I gladly accepted a coffee and it was brought rom the galley and offered with a tasty matcha cookie!

Just when we have thought that the service has ended, the lovely ANA crew appeared with a basket of snacks and sweets to offer to Premium Class pax halfway through the descent. A lovely touch! We were all in praises for the ANA cabin crew for the wonderful service on this very short sector.

While passing the crew during disembarkation, the Premium Class crew serving us passed us a postcard and thanked us for flying ANA. It was with great surprised that they actually wrote a thank you card on behalf of the entire flight and cabin crew after we had sang praises of their service and how it was our first time flying ANA!






Among all my limited premium class experiences on short-hauls, this flight on ANA has certainly ranked as the best. Service was personal, attentive and non-intrusive, and the small touches by the crew do make a difference and left a lasting impression on this very short flight. Having experienced ANA's fabulous service, I am now more keen then ever to fly on ANA again in the near future!

Our luggage were one of the first to be out as they were priority tagged for Premium Class.

From Haneda T2, it was a 19min monorail ride to Hamamatsucho, and a 10min walk from the station later, brings us to Mitsui Gardens Hotel Shiodome Italia-gai. Hotel offers reasonable sized rooms for Tokyo standards and has deluxe amenities such as a Nespresso machine.






The hotel is also about 10-15min walk away from Shimbashi and Ginza districts.




It is pedestrian-friendly in Ginza on Saturdays.

It has always been a must to have Ichiran ramen while in Japan. The Shimbashi branch is much less crowded than the Shinjuku branch.




Another must have are cakes from Harbs. Tried a few during the short stay in Tokyo as well.

With the BAKE craze in Singapore, why not have it in Tokyo where there is barely a queue!

It was also my first time having a meal at Coco Curryhouse in Japan.




Back to busy Shimbashi area for some last minute shopping on the final day before departure.




And chanced upon this small eatery with OMG-ish delicious buta-don!

Heading back to Haneda, it was a 13min monorail ride from the station near our hotel to the international terminal. The monorail statio is directly linked t the Departure hall and a couple of min after alighting from the monorail, we were at SQ's check-in counters at Row A.






Immigration and security was not too busy and soon we were doing a bit of last minute shopping at the duty free area.




Heading up to the ANA lounge to grab some light bites. I have been to this lounge a couple of time and knew what to expect. F&B is not bad for a first-timer, but will become quite repetitive for frequent visitors to the lounge as the food offerings rarely change much.

Welcomed at the door and entered the Business cabin. As reviewed by many, the A350 is fitted with the New Business Class long-haul seats, which is one of the most comfortable Business Class seats in the market.




It would be 12K for me on this mid-haul.

New noise-cancellation headphones (a crew mentioned that they are from Hitachi) are in use. This fitted more comfortably than the Phitek headphones. There is also a volume adjuster on the headphones.

Time to start the IFE. There are a couple of movies I would like to watch, starting with Beauty and the Beast.

Sticking with the Japanese theme, I went for the Hanakoireki menu. First up was the beautifully presented floral-shaped cold bento set. This was new as previously the cold starter bento was presented in a square shape. However, I felt the portion sizes have been reduced for the starter bento set. Taste wise was ok.




After the starter bento was cleared, the warm bento set was served, same presentation as before along with miso soup and green tea. It was not bad, though I find the meal served on ANA was a bit better taste wise.








Dessert was the Azuki bean ice-cream with green tea sauce.




The pacing of the dinner service was just right, and next up was the cheese and fruits. I accepted the cheese selection and picked the sole melon from the fruit tray.

Another visit to the lavatory, the one at the front of the aircraft. This particular lavatory is smaller than normal and does not even have amenities cabinets, Amenities were instead placed on a holder.

Flipped my seat over to form the bed. For some reasons, the duvets on the seats were of the old Business Class colours and not the newer ones used on the New Business Class seats. Interesting that SQ would overlook this.




Crew came to take orders for coffee/tea and I requested for an iced mocha. First time I tried this onboard. Pralines were also offered.




Time for movie in bed! Started on the second movie, Logan.




A bottle of water was offered.




About 2 more hours to go after I finished with both movies. Channel-hopped through the IFE selection.






Towards the end of the flight, we requested for the 70th Anniversary SQ Teddies and the crew was nice enough to dig out a couple of sets for us!




All comfortable flights have to come to an end and soon the aircraft started descending into Changi.

A very comfortable flight on SQ as usual, with the consistent SQ-formulated good and reliable service by the cabin crew. The expected high SQ standards were met, though not much difference from most other SQ Business Class flight experiences. Overall, it has always been a pleasure to fly with SQ Business Class.
