B747 Economy in 3-3-3 Layout! Air India BOM-DEL

Tue May 16, 2017 8:50 am

I'll make this report a simple one. Just wanted to share a rare experience with Air India's retro B747-400 and also sitting in Economy with 3-3-3 seating layout! I believe most of AI's 744s are retiring and only a few are operational at the moment.

There are many senior crew members on 747s as Air India has different crew depending on aircraft type. B747s and B777s share the same crew as what I've heard from last time when I flew with them in First Class back in February.

Generous legroom

I did not, however, felt any extra wide on the width side. I believe aisles are a bit more spacious instead. Not sure. These 3-3-3 arrangements are only in the forward Economy cabin between Door 1 and Door 2. Behind that is the usual 3-4-3 Economy cabin. Air India never operated Premium Economy, so I wonder in the past if these forward cabin seats are reserved for higher fare ticket holder or if any fare type was allowed in there as well.

This time, I was booked in the cheapest "E" class and was able to select the front cabin at the time of ticketing so anyone can book a seat there as long as it was available.

Snacks

Now... Air India used to be very generous with meal portion even on domestic flights, but they have cut down on dessert - now you can only get a $0.15 Nestle chocolate. Just a half year ago I had one of the best chocolate cakes in sky and now this. Ugh!

You still get a choice of veg. or non-veg. I chose the non-veg and it was Chinese style spicy chicken gravy with fried noodles, along with tomato and cucumber sandwich and warm potato pie I think it was.

I had a fantastic crew on this flight. Frequent announcement from the cockpit (which is quite rare in Air India at least in domestic), being very apologetic about 30mins delay (again not very common), and a crew member serving in my aisle showed enthusiasm during the meal service. I can see there is pride among the crew for serving on B747s! Great experience.

Thanks for this other AI 747 report. Look very similar to my very enjoyable BOM-HYD flight the other day

Wow! An AI 747 and that too in a 3-3-3 config in economy!
I could not figure, but was the seat any wider, or were the aisles wider?
Nice report, and looks like you had a very good experience with AI.

Thanks, the crew on this AI flight were professional. I believe it was the aisles which felt like wider - I think the seat itself was pretty much a standard 747 width.
