Flying the last B747-300 Classic – Mahan Air Business Class

Fri Feb 03, 2017 6:22 pm

Mahan Air B747-300 Business Class on upper deck

Tehran to Mashad

Mahan Air offers a decent and competitive Business Class product on key domestic route inside Iran. They have recently re-activated their Boeing 747-300 after 1 year of overhaul with service on Tehran to Mashad and Tehran to Bandar Abbas on a daily basis. This is the last B747-300 classic you can fly anywhere in the world!

I went to Iran as part of the Iran Aviation Tour 2016. The Business Class fare is double of economy class fare but still quite affordable to foreigner. (about $120-150 varies) If you're an AvGeek, this is a bargain price to bag a B747 Classic experience on the upper deck!

Mahan Air operate the only business class lounge at Tehran Mehrabad Airport which handle all the domestic flights in the country's capital city. It is located at the land side, upstairs above the airline office and post office.

Business Class passengers and elite Mahan Miles and More (their own frequent flyer) members can access the lounge. Economy passengers can also buy access which cost about $15.

Boarding via Stairs

There are only a few contact gates in Mehrabad built before the Islamic Revolution before 1979 so most of the flights are connected by remote bus.

All of the boarding take place by stairs which give a great view of the aircraft and we can take some photo around prior to boarding.

Conclusion

Our Mahan Air B747-300 flight was short but very enjoyable. The cabin crew were great with excellent service. I am really glad to fly the B747 classic one more time in 2016. This is truly a highlight of my Iran Aviation Tour.

Mahan Air B747-300 currently flies daily from Tehran to Mashad and Bandar Abbas.

Well that's an impressive meal for a 1hr flight, are they planning on using her for anything longer than that ?

The B747-300 were supposed to be used on Hajj flight to Jeddah but Iran didn't participate the Hajj this year so they were used for high demand domestic flights. They have no problem filling up them on domestic trunk route.

I tried to check the current day situation on Mahan's website, where the timetable they provide also indicates the equipment flown. This 747-300 seems to be flying to Meshed only once a week (Monday late hours) and returns to Tehran Mehrabad but for the rest of the week it seems to be on ground which sounded a bit unusual to me. Maybe it's still being used for some hi-density chartering? At a free time of mine, I'll try to go to their Istanbul GSA office and dig out more and solid info (if available...).

It is flying domestic on almost daily basis but the schedule on Mahan's website isn't accurate and to be trusted......
