Hello!

I wanted to just get some feedback before enlisting into the queue.

I have a better picture of the Caravan, but there's a taxi sign behind it. I also have a lot of nice back lit photos.
Thanks for stopping by!

I'm sorry, it doesn't seem like I can edit posts.

I made some changes to the photos so I decided to post them here.

All three look blurry and hazed to me, especially the 208.

Do you think this is caused by shutter speed, post, or just the weather conditions?

Weather conditions and time of day. Seems like both were taken right in the middle of the day, where heat haze is most problematic. Early morning and late afternoon are usually the best times to shoot and not have it be an issue.

Okay, so do you think my shutter speed and technique were okay? It's hard for me to tell, this is like my 5th time spotting and at a camera. :P
We have some pretty cool arrivals and departures at 7:00-8:00, so maybe I'll shoot around then. Do you think my shots will improve? I'm unsure with myself so I'm sorry if I need that confirmation.

That time frame should be fine. Lighting should be good enough but not too harsh. As far as overall technique, I would simply suggest:
1. Make sure you are well within range of your lens (the greater the zoom, the more quality you will lose)
2. Shutter speed between 1/800 and 1/1000
3. ISO between 100 and 200
4. If you are using autofocus, keep the camera as still as possible to avoid blur. If you are using manual (like I do), give yourself enough time to adjust to the sharpest setting

Finally, since you are relatively new, try to take as many images of aircraft as you possibly can. The more images you take, the more your technique will improve. ;)

Thank you so much! I'll try all of this next time I go. One more thing, when I use ISO 100-200, I cannot achieve a high shutter speed.

On a sunny day you should be able to use ISO 100, f/8, and get a 1/400 shutter or faster.

Yeah, I got these shots at 1/300-1/500 using aperture priority and an ISO of 200. Although Runway28L did suggest a higher shutter speed. I don't think the softness is coming from me though, I'm pretty sure it's coming from heat haze, so I'll try again early in the morning. Thanks everyone!

Hi, I understand that these shots weren't the best, and I'll make my next run when it isn't 90 degrees outside. But I did a pre-screen on Jetphotos and the folks there said that this one is passable.

I still think you would get hit with a rejection here for that image being hazed. Frankly, I'm very surprised someone there said it was passable, there are wavy lines along the edges of the wing plus the nose seems blurry.

It's worth noting that different sites have different standards, based off of personal experience (I've had images passed on A.net and rejected on JP at the same time and vise-versa).

Ok, thanks for your input. I'm setting my alarm early on Sunday ;) Hopefully won't be baked by the sun.

P.S. The heat haze you may be seeing is the exhaust shooting upwards but I'm not sure if that's what you're talking about.

Top photo looks blurry, especially in the nose area; also looks underexposed;
Bottom photo is soft, especially in the upper part of the fuselage; borderline underexposed.

I'm not that good at screening, but these are my opinions that I have with these photos. I would give other screeners some input of these photos.

Ok, I kind of thought so. It was my first time in the rain with expensive equipment and I didn't focus on my shutter speed (which was like 1/50) so yeah. Kind of expected it, but thanks anyway!

The Shorts is super blurry and a 200% no-go.
The Saab is much better, although still a bit marginal.

Saab is 50/50, could be salvagable, but I'd try to get images of static aircraft in good light until you have some experience. Those tend to be easier to shoot and get accepted.

Honestly I wouldn't bother. Also upon looking at the photo again, the aft section looks a little blurry.

So I never got my wrench to take off my polarizing filter, so I decide to take some shots on the ramp. Would this pass? Also let me know if I can edit out mistakes or if it's unfixable.

N991DB: Poor quality, blurry, overexposed sky, needs a tighter crop
N472MM: Poor quality, grainy, oversharpened, overexposed sky, needs a tighter crop

Seems like the not-so-great weather is causing a lot of issues in both images.

Yeah, tried shooting through the fence, the planes were quite far and it was a bad day for lighting. I finally got my polarizing filter off so I'll try again.

Also low in frame. But most importantly, it looks like you caught the fence you were shooting through on the left side of the frame, which unfortunately makes this one a non-starter.

Vertical framing is fine, horizontally it would need a tighter crop. Otherwise underexposed and softish, marginal quality. However as Kaphias pointed out, part of the fence is visibile, which makes this a motive thing.

They would all be rejected for motive, I presume. Good eye though, I especially like the third, even more so if the focus point was obvious and purposeful. The first frankly isn't that interesting. The second may have been acceptable if it was portrait format to include the nose gear and not backlit.

The nose close-up shot (2nd one) would most likely be the best one for motive, IMO; the first and third photos show only parts of the cockpit and I would highly doubt that either two of the three would work for motive.

The first two I doubt would make it due to motive.

N145HM: Overexposed, flat, soft, needs CW
N14704: Flat, borderline oversharpened in some spots
N690DL: Oversharpened, needs slight CW

Flat is just another term for low contrast.

Edit: For the helicopter and the UA B73G, I mean to type CCW rather than CW, so my mistake. Need some sleep.

EC45 looks blurry
PA23 looks flat and not great (although pretty decent for a phone photo).

tysm for the feedback. I'm going to put the 757 in the queue. I'm not going to save the helicopter photo as I've lost it in my ocean of files. Not even going to try with the PA23 but it was a heck of a nice flight today!
