Opinions please

Mon May 14, 2018 2:15 pm

All,

I've owned an 80D for well over a year now but have only recently made it my primary camera. I'm often struggling to determine sharpness as the 80D's images display differently in Zoombrowser (due to the higher resolution) - I'll look initially and the images seem spot on, however I'll keep looking (I know, I know, I'm a pixel-peeper!) and they'll gradually start to look slightly blurry to me. This is a much more common occurrence with aircraft that feature darker coloured liveries.

This is at 1800 pixels as I can't of course upload the original file here. I tried to upload the original to Flickr but it displayed exactly the same as this edit. If anyone would care to look at the original I can forward it by email.

I suspect the reason why darker liveries look slightly blurry is because of marginal CA around high-contrast detail, which is to be expected. I think this is tricking my eyes, however to put my mind at ease second opinions would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Karl

To minimize weird artifacts on high-contrast edges, you can always reduce in-camera sharpening to zero (is one of the parameters in what Canon calls Picture Style).

Other than that, the 1800px example shows some *very minimal* jaggies on the Eurowings titles, while the fine detail on the tail is perfectly retained. I would not consider that blurry in any case.

Cheers,
Miguel

Cheers, guys - I kinda thought it was me being pedantic but needed a second opinion. Kas, I would appreciate it if you could look at the original file, however as that's what I'm more concerned about. I'm pretty sure it is just CA on those high-contrast edges, but I'm at the point now where every time I look at the high-res version I'm seeing blur because it's now in my head!

Cheers,
Karl
