Re: Pre Screen Feedback Please

So, I have a new lens which I got to put properly into action today for the first time! It's a Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L IS II .

Being a professional lens it is obviously a lot different to the one I was using so I'm just after some feedback on the quality of these images as my editing process is likely to change slightly with a higher quality lens. (as you can see the light changed throughout the shoot so I have tried to pick a range from the day)

Hi All ... I like the darkness in the clouds in these one but am not sure how that fits in with the screening rules.

-OJSB: passable
-THC: passable
-LRL: passable
-XZL: OS underside of main gear, engines, nose/fuselage.
-ZLQ: nice
-5968: OS underside fuselage.

Thanks Kas. Good to know that most of these are acceptable .. and that some are actually quite good. The 2 that are OS hopefully sounds fixable. Seems like a good start with the new lens :-)

Have done some re-editing of the 2 from above that were both over sharp. I have reduced the sharpening so hopefully they are OK

Hi All

Just after some feedback on this one. Not sure of the cropping. Its not tight on the plane however I wanted to try to include some of the rain cloud background as a contrast to the white of the plane.

Thanks in advance :-)

Hi Chris, I think that by cropping tighter you won't lose any significant feature of the clouds or background, so I would go for that.

Cheers,

1. Overexposed, oversharped
2. same
3. low contrast, oversharped
4. same
5. backlit, upper part of the sky is very bright
6. Overexposed/low contrast, oversharped
7. Oversharped, but some parts look blurry/soft. Also a bit low contrast
8. Probably the best one, but still a little bit oversharped
9. Similar to 7.
10. Oversharped, overexposed, too much contrast.

Thanks for your feedback .. I am a little disappointed that none are any good but that’s more frustration with myself. The oversharpening im guessing is a workflow issue as I have changed lenses to a much better lens but not really changed my process.

I’ll go back to re-editing and see what I can improve.

Thanks again :)

I agree with Joost's comments. The overexposure in most cases isn't very bad and will just require a minor tweak in highlights (maybe -20). The Brunei is unfortunately a no-go due to the light. From #7 onwards, there isn't much oversharpening, but they do look soft.

Also, the Royal Brunei had a mask on the sky in the last version to try and brighten it up a bit but it looks like this may have caused some problems. This is the version without the mask - maybe its better, maybe its still destined for the bin?? https://image.ibb.co/ijpeNe/Royal_Brune ... 818_V2.jpg

VH-VZO: Cockpit area looks soft. I'd add some selective sharpening to that region.
VH-LQQ: A bit yellow but may be ok.
VH-LQH: Could be a bit brighter... I would add another 10%.
VH-QON: Ok.
VH-VNB: Ok.
VH-YFU: A bit soft/blurry. Lighting doesn't seem to help.
VH-YUG: Oversharpened in some areas.
VH-VUC: I'd go over the right winglet's edges with the eraser tool.
VH-VUA: Same as above.

The Royal Brunei is backlit, oversharpened, and hazed. I'd unfortunately bin that one.

QF A38 : OVC weather makes the sky almost Overexposed. It needs some CW Rotation i think.Slight OS but not serious to me. Hard to make it due to the poor light condition and marginal quality sorry.
VXU : Tail part looks OS to me but not serious. Could be brighter. Halos around aircraft.
EBC : Also tail looks OS to me but not quiet serious. Could be brither. Halos around aircraft.
EKX : Very poor light condition which could probably be given Dark/UE. Some parts also look blurry. Slight vignetting. Hard to make it i think.
YIB : It has slight halos but not as serious as VXU and EBC.
YVA : Marginal quality i think, still has slight halos above the aircraft and around the winglet.

Cheers,
Harry

Hi Everyone

Quick one .. the below picture appears to have halos especially around the landing gear. As I don't normally encounter this issue, I am a little lost in how to remove these. I have watched a couple of Youtube clips which sounds easy but I'm not a Photoshop user so got lost pretty quickly. (I am using lightroom)

Does anyone have any tips, trick or just general guidance on how to fix these?

Hi Chris,
Halos are hard to remove or cover actually. I encounter sometime but most of time they occur when my editing process has problem. For example, using too much Highlight & Shadow will cause, HDR will cause (It doesn't look like you apply it), using too much Noise reduction could cause it too.
I would suggest you to check the origin image first to see if they have already existed before you screen.

Cheers,
Harry

Hi All

Just after some feedback on this one. It was taken against quite a dark sky just before the rain set in. I think it looks OK, but just after a 2nd opinion particularly on the exposure of the aircraft. Not sure if its just because its white and stands out against the sky or, perhaps its slightly overexposed.

I have a number of others to edit similar to this so if this one is OK, then there is a good chance thee others will be too.

Hi Everyone ..

Just after a bit of feedback on this LATAM 787-9. It was taken pretty much on sunset , on a cloudy day with not much light around (the lens certainly helped pull it out this far!) however I keep looking at it thinking its too blue or too dark.

I think I have pushed it about as far as it will go so your feedback would be much appreciated .. because I am just not sure on this one.

Hi Chris,
The LATAM B787 looks poor quality for me. Since the background is brighter than the aircraft, the aircraft seems unerexposed. Some parts look Oversharpened to me such as REG and tail.Engine and gears look bit of iffy as they look like blurry to me. Hard to make it i think.

Cheers,
Harry

Provided my current screening list is accepted, I will be on 99 photos which means I have been looking for one to be my 100th. I have selected the one attached however, I would just like some feedback on it before uploading. I think its good and will make it but I don't want to load it and then have if rejected so thought I would test it out here first.

The bottom outline of the aircraft seems a bit sharp, plus the hor.stab. Using the eraser on these areas will remove the sharpening and things will look smoother. Otherwise looks nice.

Feels like many people hitting 100 this week, good on all of you!

Just after some feedback on this one please... mainly for motive. I know fences are a contentious topic and while I would always prefer not to have one in the frame, sometimes it happens.

Image

I have reviewed the acceptance guide and feel that the fence line in the above shot would fall into the acceptable category as it is not more than 1/3 of the frame .. "Fences are often a problem when photographing static displays at airshows. Try to work around them when shooting if possible. They will lead to a motive rejection on airliners.net. For regular shooting situations, fences should not block any part of the aircraft. Fences taking up more than one-third of the frame can also be considered motive rejections even if not blocking part of the aircraft."

Putting aside personal preferences one way or the other .. does the above shot fit within the acceptance criteria and if yes .. is it also an acceptable photo?

Thanks for the feedback as this will help with a couple more I have where the shot is good but there is similar amount of fence.

Looks slightly oversharped, e.g. jaggies near the tail and trailing edge of the left wing.
The light is absolutely perfect, but next time you should use a stepladder. Without the fence the photo would be so much better (even though this one should be accepteble as per A.net standards).

Thanks Dutch. You are right, the light for this one was perfect. Was definitely the right time of day! I agree that it would have been preferable to have the step ladder .. but just one of those things this time :-( The sharpening is easy enough to fix so looks like while not as good as it could have been, I'm pleased to have another opinion that the fence isn't going to kill this one off.

I do have alternative to the fence shot ...

Hi everyone, hope you can help

Just had this one rejected for Blurry and Under Exposed. Happy to accept this decision but so I can continue to improve, I am interested in your thoughts on where the blurriness is as obviously I missed it when selecting the pic.

Not worried about the under exposed as thats easily fixed but if its unfixable blurry, then I guess its going in the bin.
