That's tough light. The sun seems to be on the opposite side of the aircraft (underexposed) and I can imagine for some the sky is too overexposed (it's a bit overexposed and could be better, but not super bad either). The nose and #1 engine seem a bit blurry or soft at best.

I lost leeway on focus trying to keep the ISO at 400 and can easily darken the sky and add more sharpening. An issue I seem to be having is anything other than direct head-on sunlight being acceptable. It's a D800, there's a ton of dynamic range and shadows can be recovered, but then it looks unnatural. In Calgary where the sun is always so low in the sky I'm having a hell of a time. Corrective gradients are apparently the only way I've been able to produce correct exposure while not being dinged for low contrast.

The notion of rejection with "backlit" being the sole cause it was on my last one is disheartening. If that backlight results in underexposure, then sure... but the balance of lightened shadows, contrast, and overexposure in the edit is proving difficult.
