Rejected Photo Feedback & Questions

Fri Jan 19, 2018 9:22 pm

Hey everyone,

This is my first post on here, after recently acquiring a new camera I've decided to upload some photos - to no avail - and was just seeking some feedback on these photos and what I could improve to get some photos accepted. Below the photos are the reasons that they were rejected and the camera settings I used to take the photos.

Qantas A330: https://www.dropbox.com/s/wnjjp7d1dxeutqn/DSC_0137.jpg?dl=0
f/6.3, 1/500 sec, ISO 100
N/A

Qantas A380: https://www.dropbox.com/s/3288md8s8vp4h4h/DSC_0154.jpg?dl=0
f/5.0, 1/500 sec, ISO 100
CCW Rotation, Colour (Cyan Cast), Underexposed

MasKargo A330: https://www.dropbox.com/s/hzzto3ais7xnfne/DSC_0173.jpg?dl=0
f/4.5, 1/500 sec, ISO 100
Quality, Soft, Underexposed, Noise, CCW Rotation

Etihad A380: https://www.dropbox.com/s/wfluzy9jg6dhpv6/DSC_0191.jpg?dl=0
f/4.5, 1/500 sec, ISO 100
Colour (Yellow Cast), Low in Frame, Overexposed, Oversharpened

I also seem to be getting small areas, particularly on the ends of the plane (like the nose and tail/rego areas) as well as the engines, that are out of focus, and I was just wondering if that was just an aperture setting issue (i.e. if I push my aperture up to f/8.0 or something that will help fix those problems), or something else? The rest of my photo seems to be sharp but it is just small regions that are blurry.

Thanks in advance for all your feedback and help,
Marco Alberto

Hello Macro,
I have seen all the photos that you posted here. And i am very sorry that all of them are underexposed to me. And those are having very poor quality. Most of them are having colour problem.
IMO, i guess that you took those photos inside the terminal with a glass which was bit of Green colour which lead to the colour problem. But that's easy to fix in PS especially the RAW file.
Regarding to the Blurry Issue, aa of them were seems to be blurry to me. According to your setting data, when i spot plane i use F8-F10 most of time and too big aperture will lead to part of airplane blurry. But in this case, i think the major factor is the GLASS refraction which will make it blurry. And Blurry is unfiixable i think.
Composition looks not so good. Try to crop it more center and don't leave so much space.

Cheers,
Harry

Hi Marco,

Welcome to the forum. I looked at your images and have the following feedback:

1. Qantas A330: The image is underexposed (confirmed by the histogram); it could also use more contrast and sharpening. Finally it looks a little low in the frame. The full sized image is indeed blurry. However, if you fist resize the image to 1200 pixels and then start your editing, I believe it could result in an acceptable image. It is important to reduce the image size first. Doing as the last step will result in degradation of quality.
2. Qantas A380: The rejection reasons are all fixable. Again, if you resize the image down to 1200 pixels and then level, crop, adjust levels and sharpen, it should be passable. The original (as Harry also said) is blurry at full size.
3. MAS Kangaroo A330: Exposure is OK for me...just needs more contrast. Leveling also appears OK to me. Again, resize it to 1200 pixels and apply some USM.
4. Ethihad A380: Unfortunately, this one is unfixable even after resizing to 1200 pixels. All the rejection reasons are valid and could be correctable if the original was of better quality.

There are many factors that can impact the blurriness: wider apertures with long focal lengths can result in shallow depth of field; very small apertures can also produce images that are not sharp. You need to find the "sweet spot" aperture for the lens you're using (usually around f/8); slow shutter speeds can cause motion blur; lens distortion characteristics can render the center are in focus while the perimeter areas can be distorted. I typically use a 300mm focal length at an f/5.6-f/8 range aperture and shoot at about 1/1000th of a second shutter speed (ISO 200). I always use JPEG (vs. RAW) and most of the time upload 1200 pixel sized images.

If you can post some of you edited images at 1200 pixels we can give you more feedback.

Thanks for your suggestions, I would appreciate you having a look at the edited images at 1200px again. I can actually see a visible difference between the originals I posted and these edits and how resizing before doing all of the edits makes a difference too! Something I'll always try to remember whenever I'm editing from now on. I was, in fact, shooting through the glass of the international terminal in Sydney, and as such, I can see why those blurry spots were probably smudges on the glass - I was surprised there wasn't more given how smudged the glass was! I'm hoping to get out again soon and try using an aperture closer to f/8.0; I tested out with one of my scale models (it's too hot to go spotting, nearly 40 C/100 F) and found around f/8.0-10.0 yielded the sharpest image.

I agree with the Etihad one, I was rushing to try and get a few shots of it as it came past before we had to run to the gate to catch our flight - probably the cause of the lower quality. Hopefully will get better with practice though and not shooting through the glass as well. Thanks again for your help and looking forward to your responses :)

Hello Marco,

The last two really look oversharpened if I take a look at 100%.You can see visible jaggies along most lines in the photo. The Qantas A380 also looks a bit high in frame. The MasKargo A330 is not level with the horizon. The Qantas A330 is still looking dark/underexposed. I really doubt the originals are worth editing. If you want you can always sent me one so I can have a look or try an edit. Or place them here in the forum. Greets Stefan

Marco,

I agree with Stefan's observations. All 3 images show jaggies (over-sharpening). You could try editing on a background layer which enables you to use the eraser tool on the background copy to remove areas where jaggies appear while leaving other areas sharpened. The MAS A330 and the Qantas A380 also have a green tint. Finally the A380 is cropped too close to the edges and as mentioned by Stefan, could be lower in the frame. At this angle, the tail dominates the frame and should be considered in the centering decision. In the end, there is no substitute for a good original.

Yeah, unfortunately, the A380's size caught me off guard a little and I was using my 70-300mm lens, and as such the original was already very close to the edges of the frame. So trying to level it made it super close to the edges and is unworkable. I've included some changes to the two A330s, however, I'm still unsure whether I've gotten rid of the jaggies or not. I can see about the positioning of the A380 now too, the tail needs to be a lot closer to the bottom of the frame, however again the original picture doesn't allow me enough sky to move it down enough.

I think the key is getting some better originals without the glass in front of me so that even if the originals aren't perfect, they are editable, unlike these photos that I've taken. I'll keep that in mind next time I go out spotting and might post a few up here and see if they're any better!

Unfortunately both of those last photos you linked are blurry and poor quality. They will not make it here, sorry.

Hi again,

I've managed to get out spotting again and have taken a number of photos and was looking for some further feedback on these ones (as my others ones uploaded before were not of good enough quality). Any feedback/tips would be greatly appreciated :).

Qantas 737-800: https://www.dropbox.com/s/onzu10u796qkzzs/QANTAS%20737-8%201.jpg?dl=0
Singapore 777-200ER: https://www.dropbox.com/s/35dd6j6ffl16ase/SINGAPORE%20777-2%202.jpg?dl=0

Hopefully, there'll be a few more to come after I get around to finishing editing them :)

The Qantas is blurred and the Singapore is backlit. I doubt either would be acceptable here. Sorry.
