Advice on sharpening

Hi All,

I'm working hard to develop a "screener's eye" and trying to figure out how much is too much when it comes to sharpening.

This image is not particularly exciting and (as you can see) is a little soft, but I thought it might be salvageable and could make a good test subject. Ideally I'd like to capture better images in the first place, but that's easier said than done when it comes to moving prop planes

Have I got the sharpening right on any of these? A couple look overdone to me, but I wanted to see what others think. Any suggestions on figuring out the right amount?

It's actually blurry in stead of soft. Sorry to say that no amount of sharpening will fix this photo.

Thanks airkas1, this is the kind of judgment I am trying to develop, but right now I am struggling to differentiate between blurry and soft in many cases. This one was rejected for soft instead:

Would you agree with this? To me it seems to be of similar quality (and probably also not worth pursuing).

I'll go out and get better shots of these rather than banging my head against a monitor trying to get them to look good.

Actually, it looks blurry and soft. It might help if you were not using that slow a shutter speed. Even at 1/400 and with that 3 blade prop you would get nice blur on the prop. Hope this helps

Thanks beaverhunter - I'll try some higher shutter speeds next time I'm out.

Unless of course you want to get that amount of propblur or a full disc. It's a trade-off; higher shutterspeed = more keepers, less propblur. Lower shutterspeed = less keeper, but possible one sharp photo that has the propblur you want.

Yeah I'm a big fan of the full disc but man it's hard

To my eye, around 30% blur and up looks decent enough. I'll definitely experiment some more...
