Pre Screening: Cessna 172R cockpit

Mon May 22, 2017 1:25 am

Hi All, I just got back from my first solo Cross Country flight and took this photo of the cockpit on the ground. The sun was straight on the nose, causing the overexposure of the outside. I wanted a second opinion on the photo.

Unfortunately I think it will get done for overexposed. Congrats on your first X-country though!

Hey Zach, Try setting up your camera on manual exposure and expose for the outside. Ordinarily, this will render the inside dark. Use the pop-up flash or better yet a shoe mounted flash that has TTL metering and it should illuminate the inside nicely resulting in an image that looks well balanced.

Congratulations from me as well on the X-Country solo!

Thanks for the tips. I'll try again with my next flight and try with that photo

Congrats, Captain!

Here`s a simple trick, try covering the windshield with a cover or some kind of blanket. Alternatively, park the bird in the hangar. It will make a flight deck shot so much easier, without the bright light coming in.

Granted, my newspapers don´t look too fancy but you get the idea in the following example:

Perhaps another obvious one: flash up the instruments in the relative "dark" as described above; this makes a cockpit so much more interesting.

Good luck!
