You Ever Shot A Bird Later Involved In An Accident

Fri Feb 01, 2013 12:50 pm

Hi,

any of you ever shot a plane that was later involved in an accident?
I have had that experience only last night........when I read the local newspaper!
I shot this plane only a few weeks ago:

Now look at her after yesterday´s mishap....SAME airfield:

http://www.eluniverso.com/2013/01/31...ue-dos-avionetas-pista-vinces.html

I was wondering if you have had the same experience...........¨before and after¨ pics would be great for this thread!

Cheers,

Just once that I know of (and it's not good enough to get in the DB). Shot on a rainy evening at LAX:

Yes - both helicopters.Took a photo of A109 N2NR as it departed my home airport and found out that it crashed an hour later, sadly killing all three onboard.I also have photos of the Police helicopter (G-SEWP) that crashed and was written off whilst surveying the A109 crash site.

You might want to stop taking photos of aircraft, Johan, it sounds dangerous!

Here are a couple I know I have:

N401LH sightseeing helicopter, which collided with a Piper Lance over the Hudson River in August 2009, killing all 9 on the two aircraft.

I know that two Kalitta Air 747's I photographed in the past were involved in an accident:

Amazing people, keep them coming..............
Aviation is safe and all that, but it is still amazing how many frames bite the dust in action!

Tristar501 and Ljungdahl........are you sure your camera isn´t some kind of lethal device?

And an unrelated conversation this morning reminded me I also shot Jack Roush's Raytheon Premier a few years before its untimely demise at Oshkosh.

And sadly, I lost a friend when this plane went down.

At least no injuries in both cases.
HB-ORA was completely rebuilt and is flying again. And the wreckage of HB-POU was sold and it is planned to rebuild it as well.

When I first started uploading here, Accident category was selected if an aircraft was subsequently involved in one and it seemed that quite a high proportion of ones I had photographed were later involved in crashes.
This is one I will never forget though, the comment says it all! On its next pass over the airfield it crashed

Actually, I shot at Juliana and Grand-Case airports some aircrafts which crashed around in the Caribbean area. The AOM-Cubana DC-10-30 F-GTDI, Cubana's Yak-42D CU-T1285, Air Caraïbes DHC-6-300 F-OGES, Air Saint-Martin B1900D F-OHRK, the Saint-Barthelemy based BN Trilander, Trans Caraïbes Vulcanair P.68 (lost during a hurricane strike) and Air France A340-313 F-GLZQ.
And on the European land the Air France Concorde F-BTSC at Brest some days before its crash.

I have recorded Blue Angel #6, Pan Am Lockerbie N739PA a week before its demise, Untied N612UA, the South Tower Ship on 9/11 and was supposed record the New Legacy belonging to Excelair that was involved in the Gols 737 MidAir over Brazil but it never got here. Odly enough, weeks before my friend shot the Gols New 737 at Seattle on roll out day. Sad and strange...

I shot these 3 photos (and several more of this aircraft), at July 5, 2016.
ACT Airlines Boeing 747-400F TC-MCL operating for Turkish Airlines at the time since 6 months.

It crashed 6 months later at Manas Airport in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan operating as Turkish Airlines Flight 6491

When I heard the first news reports about it, I immediately remembered that registration for some reason...

It's surreal to see that very same aircraft/cockpit like this:

That cockpit is also an eerie reminder of the Lockerbie crash, for me at least.

Nearly identical situation on the ground, yes.

Unfortunately I have photographed a few aircraft over the years that have been involved in crashes, from the Malaysia 777s to a couple much closer to home.

Rossair Cessna 441 VH-XMJ. This one hit home a bit more as a friend was onboard.

Unfortunately I have my share of planes involved in accidents too...

This is the plane that overran Vnukovo runway on December 2012, just 5 months after taking this photo.

This one crashed less than a week after taking this photo, during an airshow rehearsal. Unfortunately the pilot and a bystander on the ground were killed.

Crashed this summer.

Crashed due to density altitude.

Crashed during an airshow.

Hit the hangar during taxi.

This one hit a tree while landing without injuries, it has recently returned to the skies.

The 2 following planes were actually involved in accidents BEFORE I took photos of them, but I think they fit here anyway.

This one was involved in an air-to-air collision with a Cessna 172 8 years before taking this photo. Fortunately, both aircraft managed to land safely.

This one was involved in a water taxiing accident with a floatplane Cessna 172 9 years before taking this photo. The 172 was written off, this one underwent a lengthy restoration.

(Can I post links to "the other site", since they were not accepted here? If it's not allowed please remove them, sorry!)

This was the first glider I flew as a glider pilot student. Few months after I started the course, it was caught inflight in a sudden thunderstorm and was severely damaged in the following outlanding. Both the instructor and the student did not suffer any injuries. The glider was thought to be written off, but it was recently repaired.

I photographed both of the Malaysian B777 aircraft mentioned, but unfortunately never in the special colour scheme. :( Also snapped G-YMMM quite a lot of times.

9M-MRD probably was the most beautiful of all B777s running around. It looked absolutely stunning in that blue colour scheme.

I snapped quite a few photos of futured doomed aircraft (Egypt Air Boeing 767, Alaska Airlines MD-80, US Air Express Beech 1900, etc).

The oddest thing was while I was shooting the Egypt Air 767 (SU-GAP). I was in LAX at Tom Bradley Int'l Terminal snapping photos when I saw the Egypt Air flight. I took a quick photo of the tail and whole plane, and decided to move along. When i turned away from the window and began to walk away, an Arab woman covered in an entirely black veil and robe stopped me and said in a stern voice "you should take more photos. this is a special plane". So, i went back to the window and snapped more photos of SU-GAP.

A few weeks later when it crashed, I would end up selling the photos to the Associated Press for a good bit of money, and have them appear in newspapers, magazines, television, and websites around the world.

Having photographed airplanes for 40 years now...absolutely. As well as flown in planes that have later unfortunately crashed.
