Sun Jan 06, 2019 9:22 pm

Hello All,
Cologne Bonn airport is a mix of passenger and cargo airport served by airlines like Eurowings, Turkish etc for passengers and UPS,FedEx, ASL Belgium,DHL etc for cargo. The cargo planes arrive mostly at night and depart somehwere in daytime. The plane in my case used 14 L approach which passes right over city of Cologne and Rhine giving beautiful views.

The video is as follows

Here are some tips
1)Below is the illustration of 14L city approach. If you interested in photography of city of Colonge then best is to seated on right handed window seat.

2)If you wanna see the cargo planes, then better seated on left side of plane. In the illustration below, the yellow arrows shows the appraoch runs, the taxi way and the aircraft passing infront of cargo terminal and then coming to its stand in the passenger terminal. The flight was TK1671 from Istanbul to Cologne Bonn airport with Boeing 737-900ER

By far the most depart again before daylight. Between 4 and 5 in the morning is when the departure rush is at its greatest.

By the way, is the refurbishment of 14L/32R complete, or haven't they begun yet?

There are good spotting locations by the start-end of 14L, and on top of the old terminal there is also a spotting terrace.

Thanks for info.. I think that may be reason that many of those legendary cargo planes are not frequently captured by camera because of their arrival and departure times despite them passing over very populated regions that almost anyone can capture good fotos.

Yes. The efurbishment finished somewhere in November or beginning of December. Was much needed.

Can you provide a link or more details of good spotting locations for Köln Bonn Flughafen ?

Cargo aircrafts from US (UPS, FedEx) whose originating flight is from US (Memphis eg) is from there, can be seen passing over the city of Aachen. that is over 50 km away but it is possible to have a good picture. I guess people of and nearby Köln can have much better views from north or south approaches both. I know that DUS airport has one of the best spotting in Germany if not the world, its not far away from Köln Bonn airport if you are interested
