Sigma 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM

Sun Nov 18, 2018 3:07 pm

Due out next month, I'm tempted to pick up this lens and get back into spotting. Anyone else thinking of pulling the trigger on it?
One thing that always irked me was the need to either switch lenses or have a second body for the closer up shots, this lens would seem to eliminate that.
At 60-600, this lens offers a pretty good range and having used their old 50-500 in the past, I am considering it.

I can't speak for you as I don't own this lens, but I do own the 150-600mm. This one is very good, but that one seems even better. It seems like a good buy to me, but wait for some more responses.

I went ahead and pre-ordered it. Curios if anyone else is getting it.

I would if I didn't spend it on my lens a month ago

I assume you've received the new lens, how do you like it?

I didn't get it yet. It was in a perpetual "pending" order state with B&H so I went with another lens for now.
It's been on "pre-order" for months.

Bumping old thread. I am interested in acquiring this lens eventually, and was wondering if anyone has it and what their thoughts are on it? I am looking at pairing it with a D750 for now.

Thanks!

I've no experience with it but the old 50-500 is very good FOR WHAT IT IS. This is the key phrase here — what it is — a 10x zoom is inherently going to be a jack-of-all-trades but a master of none. It will be satisfactory at all but the greatest focal length (the original 50-500 was quite soft at the long end) but it's not going to match a 24-70, 70-200, 100-400 or 400/500 prime. If you want an all-in-one lens I imagine it's going to be a slight improvement on the 50-500 but I wouldn't expect it to be pin-sharp throughout its focal range.

Happy to stand corrected by someone who's used one but unless Sigma have really pulled something from up their sleeve they aren't going to to be able to bypass physics.

As a Nikon user you have the option of the excellent Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6 lens:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1175034-REG/nikon_af_s_nikkor_200_500mm_f_5_6e.html

I own one and am very happy.

Its advantages over the Sigma:

1. Constant f/5.6 aperture (as opposed to the Sigma, which gets to f/6.3 as early as ~300mm).
2. The Nikon lens is native for your d750, so it will work without glitches, and autofocus performance is faster than with 3rd party lenses.
3. Lighter and more compact.
4. Much less expensive.

I also own the Nikon 200-500 and D750, I don't think I have the best copy however. (I also dropped it 6 months ago and even after Nikon repair it still doesn't feel like it used to)

As far as 3rd party lenses go I do believe that the Tamron 150-600 is the overall better lens than the Sigma and is fairly on par with the Nikon lens. There are quite a few articles comparing the 3 out there. This is the best that i've seen: https://photographylife.com/nikon-200-5 ... 50-600mm-c

Also Nikon will be releasing 200-600 z mount lens soon...ish (tm). This one will likely be far better than any of those 3, I just wish there was a good body for it to go with. I'm personally holding off on any upgrades until the next iteration of Nikon's mirrorless bodies.

I've owned (but still don't own — that should perhaps be somewhat indicative) several third-party lenses from both Tamron and Sigma and although optically they can be every bit as good as native Canon lenses the AF just isn't as accurate or consistent. I've always been disappointed; the problem with most mainstream reviews is that they test them under controlled conditions rather than out in the field. This said, I've not owned one for a good number of years so maybe things have improved?

To address the last paragraph of the respondent above, Nikon really needs to get its act together as Sony and Canon are beginning to run away with the mirrorless market. Sony bodies still of course reign supreme but the pace at which Canon is releasing premium glass is astonishing! Nikon has done little to address the AF issues of the Z system and pro glass is seriously lacking (although before October last year the same could've been said of Canon).

If Nikon isn't careful it could lose its spot in the 'top two' to Sony.

Nikon's 200-500mm f/5.6 is a great solution for a Nikon aviation photographer.
Neither Canon nor Sony have an affordable 500mm f/5.6 zoom, while Sigma and Tamron superzooms are non-native and go down to f/6.3 at around 300mm.

Thanks for the responses all.

To clarify, my goto lens is the Nikkor 200-500. I love it, but will be going to Hyakuri soon to catch Phantoms up close. The 200mm is too much for many of the shots, so have been looking into renting the Sigma 60-600 sport for the trip.

Dylan, if you've got the option of a second body, the 70-200 2.8 or 4 (depending on budget) might be a worthwhile aquisition. I think you'll find the 60-600 to be good, but quite a big step down from the 200-500. Having used both (albeit not much for the former), and as an owner of the latter, I don't find the 60-600 to be anywhere near as sharp, or as fast as the native Nikon. Somewhat of a curveball to previously purposed solutions, but there's my .02.
