Nikon has announced the P1000 - a 16mp CMOS sensor with a 3000mm zoom. And it's 24mm on the wide-end.

Even by Nikon's standards I really can't see this being a sharp lens, given it's focal range. There's no negating the laws of physics - an all-in-one ultra-wide to mega-telephoto must have limitations. It'll be interesting, however, to see how the performance is through the middle of the range, and at what point it gets soft.

I got an email from NPS about this. It's interesting. If it has controls as easy to use as a D800 or something like that and reasonable quality, it could be a winner.
It won't be for all purposes but it's surely handy for those times when you can't take a DSLR and multiple lenses.

Yes, I think its intended to be an all-in-one travel camera, or for situations otherwise difficult for a bulky DSLR and multiple lenses.
