New to photography. What lens is good for me?

Mon Jul 09, 2018 9:00 am

When going plane spotting I have always used my dads Swrovski scope which zooms from 30x to 80x magnification which is great viewing. I was going to get an iPhone adapter for this to be able to digiscope, but no one makes an iPhone X adapter for these scopes.

This in turn has led me to wanting to buy a camera and get a good lens for it. What type of lens will give me that type of magnification?

So 10x for the closer stuff, and between 30x-80x for the further away pictures. What lens/s can achieve this?

Thanks in advance.

I hope you've got deep pockets, because you'll struggle to get two lenses to achieve the results you want, let alone a single 'jack of all trades'. Those lenses that will offer the capabilities are well over $/EUR1000, so unless you compromise on image quality it's going to get expensive (and it won't be cheap even with the compromise!).

Something else to bear in mind is that, in photography, magnification is not thee same as focal length, so you need to decide what focal range you'll need. Magnification is relative but something different. Lenses are typically fisheye (below about 12mm), ultra-wide (12-23mm), wide (24-49mm), Standard (normally considered around 50mm), telephoto (51-200mm) or super-telephoto (above 200mm), and can either have fixed focal lengths or zooms. The least used in aviation is usually the fisheye, which is only really useful for aircraft interior shots or to create an effect.
