Contrail shots

Thu Jun 14, 2018 7:32 am

Hello!

I would like to know what’s the best setting to get a great contrail shot! I have a cannon 600D with a 75-300mm lens, is it worth buying teleconverter?

Cheers

In bright conditions ISO 100 and f/8 should be possible but if there's not as much light then you'll want to bump up the ISO a little and/or use a bigger aperture. A teleconverter is totally worth it but with that lens you'll most likely lose autofocus. A 1.4x teleconverter will give you a 420mm f/8 and a 2x will give you a 600mm f/11 with the latter most likely needing to be left wide open plus an ISO bump to get a fast enough shutter speed. Also without autofocus you might get slightly out of focus shots as it can be tricky to get the focus right with contrail shots even though the focus point is pretty much infinity. I think the best thing for contrail shots is a setup that has autofocus so if you want more focal length then maybe look at a bigger and/or faster lens preferably used off eBay for a good price. For example with your 600D Canon has an EF 400mm f/5.6 which would give you an autofocus 400mm. There's also an EF 300mm f/4 + 1.4x for an autofocus 420mm f/5.6. Then there's an EF 300mm f/2.8 + 2x for an autofocus 600mm f/5.6. Also an EF 500mm f/4.5 (the f/4 is much more expensive) + 1.4x for a 700mm f/6.3 that'll most likely autofocus in nice light. There are other bigger lenses but then the cost really goes sky high!
