I want to photograph crop dusters

Sun Jul 30, 2017 4:32 pm

I've been in this hobby for a while now, so beyond just airliners I've now got photos of military jets, warbirds, general aviation, and firefighting aircraft, among other things. There's one category of aircraft that I still haven't really had a chance to see, though, and that's crop dusters. Anyone know where I might find some? I'm in California.

I lived in Eastern Washington for five years, and there were many crop dusters in the area. Photographing them at their airports is relatively easy because they return often and it's easy to note when they're operating as there is always someone at the field. In my experience, it's much more difficult to photograph them in action because of the vast area they can cover quickly. I was never able to photograph a duster at work, and only saw them working up close a few times, without my camera. In Eastern Washington they would typically operate out of dirt strips along the side of a back road in order to shorten the distances to the fields they're working. I'm not sure how'd you find them other than becoming familiar with the area... the strips I found I came across my driving around the dirt roads of the area, and a few were not even marked on sectionals. I'd recommend looking at sectionals though, and then cross-checking that information with satellite imagery and/or google street view photos, looking for the tell-tale fertilizer tanks/silos that often mark crop dusting operations.

Wish you had some time to visit South Florida, crop dusters frequent several counties where sugarcane and other crops are grown year round.

I think there are quite a few near Bakersfield and (northern) surroudings and also near El Centro/Imperial County.
