Once an AvGeek, Always an AvGeek.

Mon Jul 03, 2017 10:43 pm

I recently came across an old VHS tape I filmed when I received a video camera as a child in the 80s. I loved to watch the aircraft movements at JFK so being able to film it back then was something ;-). My passion would later lead to flight school.

I digitized and edited the film (no sound) but there are some rare birds and it was a time where you could stand at the end of the runway and film with no problem.

There are three parts to the video but I personally like the second which has some great close-ups of arriving flights: https://youtu.be/cUMuJ99bJno

I enjoyed waxing nostalgic so wanted to share in case there was any interest.

WOW! Even without the sound I loved it!!!

Nice to see you were at North Woodmere Park, we still go there today, great spot to bring a lawn chair and watch the arrivals to the 22's. Also some spots sadly no longer accessible(or patrolled to where they don't let anyone sit there)

It was nice being reminded of all the old frames I used to see from the backyard growing up in Lawrence. TOTALLY forgot about the Clipper Dash 7's! Also didn't realize we got BA Tristars, they had to be oddballs because the trijets they usually sent were of the DC10 variety. And as much as I looked out for them...never saw the Aeroflot Il86's(I thought I saw one fly over us after taking off one day when we were at Green Acres Mall, they were at 3000' or so already and it was a belly view but I could see the 4 powerplants but knew it wasn't a 74 or a DC8/707). My parents had no idea why I was having such a fit in the back seat LOL

OK so what livery is that on the 747 at the end of Vol 3? And the 727 @ 3:35 in Vol 1? I don't recognize those

Some golden oldies there.

Good that you left the video silent and not put some horrible music on it.

I believe the 747 you are referring to is an rare(ish) Air India livery and the 727 was MGM Grand Air (the short-lived all first class luxury carrier that flew the Golden Triangle JFK-LAX-LAS). If memory serves, they only seated 34 passengers or there about.
