Canon 24-70 L back focus issues

Mon Apr 10, 2017 1:45 pm

Hi,

anyone else experiencing backfocus issues with the Canon 24-70L?
In other words on some shots it is focusing on the background instead of the foreground. Of course I am able to manually select the focus point, but for example this issue also ruined a shot where I let someone else taking a shot of us. I mean I was happy enough to find someone that knew that on a DSLR you should look through the viewfinder, but if I also need to tell them about manually selecting the AF-Point it gets rather difficult.

I heard it is a known issue on the 24-105L.

I can still return it, that's why I try to make up my mind.

I am thankful for any Input.

Cheers,
Julien

Stupid question. Are you sure it's a potential lens issue, and not that the person taking the shot of you just focused on whatever else? If you have your camera set up so that it focuses when pressing the shutter half way, it's entirely possible that you just weren't under one of the focus points.

Surely it would be the easiest (and cheapest!) root cause :D

Yes, I am sure. Because it happened to some shots I've taken as well. I now found out that it seems rather common on the 24-70, too. A bit dissapointing for me, as it is otherwise a very good objective.

Well, returning it isn't expensive. I just need to look for a new one then,

Is it the f/4 or one of the f/2.8s?

I had the same issue with two brand new 24-105L IIs, to the point that micro-adjust couldn't solve the problem. I opted for Sigma's version instead, because they have the USB calibration dock - I didn't need the dock in the end as no issues but I can say that the Sigma is sharper than either Canon 24-105.

Take a look at Sigma's new 24-70 f/2.8 Art. If the other Art lenses are benchmarks, this one's gonna knock the Canons right into the middle of next week!

Hi Karl,

it is the f/4. Yeah, I read your thread as well and it prevented me from purchasing the 24-105 (as well as other critical Reviews I found).
I will definitely return mine and will take a look at the Sigma as an alternative.I heard that is supposedly pretty heavy though-

Yes, the Sigma Arts are heavy, but very nicely built. For me, weight/size isn't an issue as long as the image quality's top-notch. The Sigma 24-105 loses some sharpness beyond 90mm (to the point where I'd say the Canons have a fractional edge), but below that it's noticeably better, particularly at 24mm.

The estimated cost of the new 24-70 f/2.8 Art is around £1200 (EUR1500), so it's not cheap; for that price it's going to have to be better than the Canon f/2.8s! To be honest I think it will be, otherwise Sigma will have their first Art flop!

Another reason to go Sigma Art/Sport is for the USB dock, which calibrates far more precisely than in-camera MA.
