Alberto, I was there in November with my wife. There are signs all around the pool area saying that the use of cameras, binoculars and telescopes is prohibited. There now seems to be a security guard on duty at all times and they were very keen to enforce these new rules.

Now, depending what you mean by 'spotting', some may get more value for money than others -

From my experience there in November, photography with DSLR type cameras with 'big' lenses is definitely a no-no. Needless to say, anyone taking photos with a phone has no issues at all. It's pretty ludicrous because we saw a father told to stop taking pictures of his two young kids in the pool with his DSLR, while a young lady was videoing planes landing with her phone at the same time.

Several number collectors were using laptops and SBS boxes on the roof and weren't bothered by security at all. The use of small mini-binoculars was ignored or tolerated, but anything that looked like a spotting scope or full-sized binoculars quickly drew the attention of the guards. We did see one guy have his camera confiscated while we were there, so they seem pretty serious about enforcing the rules.

We've stayed at the old Sheraton on many occasions over the years and never had a problem there. I'm afraid under new ownership the standard of the hotel is not as high and it definitely seems to be targetting a more 'down market' clientelle. We paid for an executive floor room only to find when we arrived that the executive lounge has been closed and will be repurposed as a conference facility. I'm sad to say that we will not be staying there again for any future visits.

Photography in Dubai in July will be very challenging. Harsh light and killer heat haze.
