Similar long, thin formations could be clearly seen from space forming north/south in Tasmania and in New Zealand on Jan 11th. This phenomenon can extend for thousands of kilometres with each cloud up to 100m wide.
The rich colours of the picture Tweeted by Virgin Australia is superb, especially the angle of the red on the engine in contrast to the white cloud lines. Not your average window view!
