T6

Sat Dec 24, 2016 3:21 pm

Hi guys, I'm just starting out and after weeks of research, I have decided that I am getting the Rebel T6. All I need is a lens that can shoot pretty far. Any recommendations?

Canon Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon EF - 75mm-300mm - F/4.5-5.6 - Black is the one I'm thinking of.

This is a question that doesn't have a straightforward answer - there are many great lenses out there, for all budgets, but it depends on what focal length you use the most, and what conditions you typically shoot in. I could recommend the 75-300 (it's an okay lens with limitations) but if you plan to most often shoot at 50mm, or 400mm, it's not going to be much use.

Spend the most you can afford and buy something that will have longevity. The best value lens by far for Canon is the EF70-200 f/4 L - it's Canon's lowest-priced pro lens and is pin-sharp throughout its range - but again, if you think you'll be mostly shooting at over 200mm, it's not going to be too useful. That said, the basic EF75-300 is only sharp up to about 200mm (pretty unusable at 300mm).

How much reach do you want? You might want to consider third party lenses; the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary and the Tamron SP AF 150-600mm f/5.0-6.3 Di VC USD are also options if you want ultra long reach, both at around $900 USD. Both are big, well built lenses with tons of reach and good image quality across all but the farthest end of the lenses' capabilities. With a bit more, the updated Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 is another option at $1,400 USD. The major disadvantages to both lenses are that they are both heavy, and both require a lot of light. Obviously, both won't be as sharp or as quick and accurate to focus as the first party lenses, but they are all considered to be top notch lenses.

Are you OK with working with prime lenses and perhaps buying used? A used Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L is an affordable and very sharp lens. The design of the lens is fairly old, but it is extremely sharp and they are built tough. No image stabilization with this lens, but that is something you can compensate with through higher shutter speeds. Used examples are usually anywhere from $500-700 dollars depending on condition.
