Spotting Locations at Davis Monthan Air Base, Tuscon, AZ

Sun Sep 18, 2016 12:40 am

I'll be heading to Tuscon this week and would appreciate any suggestions on locations and best times to photograph at DM Airbase in Tuscon, AZ. Also, would like to know if the area is spotter friendly.

Thanks!

Are you talking about the active air base or the storage areas of AMARG?

For AMARG, I'm only aware of three real options -
Hire a plane with a pilot and fly over the whole place
'Walk the fence'. I know lots of people who've walked the fence and not had any issues.
You can also take the tour from the Pima Air & Space museum, but you really only get to see a small part of the base. The windows of the bus are heavily tinted as well, which makes photography tricky.

Sorry, but I know nothing about spotting possibilities at the active air base.

Thanks Steve(?). I had read a few posts on the internet about spotting locations for the airbase itself along one of the roads and was hoping to get some of the whereabouts. I am scheduled for a visit to the Pima museum as well as tour of the boneyard but am not expecting much from the boneyard due to the reasons you mentioned. Re. Walking the Fence, is there a suggested area. Being an active air base, the last thing I want is to be apprehended for suspicious activity!!!

The main places for walking the fence are South Kolb Road, East Irvington Road and East Escalante Road.

If you have any doubt about walking around the base, I'd suggest a friendly email to Public Affairs at the base: 355WGPA@us.af.mil

If you walk around the fence with a camera, expect a visit from a TuCson police officer.

I visited the area last week. Was not able to do any spotting at the air base. Some decent photo ops from the Pima Air & Spae Museum of A10's and C130's landing. I took the tour of the boneyard but photographing from inside the bus was a bust due to the tinted glass. So I put the camera down and enjoyed the tour instead.
