Slide Collection Valuation

Thu Jan 10, 2019 8:58 am

Hello everyone!

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction! My father died in a tragic plane crash 18months ago and I have inherited his aviation slide collection. The collection is huge and he always used to talk about how valuable some of his slides were. Can anyone point me in the right direction towards getting his collection valued?

I have seen several auction sites but since I don't know what each slide is worth, I can begin to sell anything. One person has offered $5000 for the collection plus the shipping but I'm not sure if I could be getting ripped off!

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Without knowing the age and quality of the images, it is difficult to consider worth. Your tradeoff is between time and money. You could put some on ebay and see if they just sit there or get bid up.

Accepting a lump sum for the lot is what you do if you are not interested in the hassle of selling each one individually. If you feel that $5,000 is too low, make a counteroffer.

You could always go the write off route and donate them to a museum. Don't donate them all at once or you will trigger appraisal requirements.

Good luck.

Follow up. in general, slides are not selling for what they went for 15-20 years ago. With the switch to digital, there are not as many slide collectors out there.

I can relate to this. I had a huge, almost 15,000 piece slide collection at one time.
Pricing is determine by age, type of slide, condition etc. How many slides do you have in total?
I would say you would be better off accepting the lump sum transaction, otherwise you are looking at a very
time consuming affair where you have to catalouge the whole collection, take pictures, list them etc. If you would like
some help, you can pm directly
