flight tracker on the plane

Thu Jul 06, 2017 2:05 pm

Forgive me if this is not the correct forum or has already been discussed (did not find anything in my search).

I was on a plane the other day and a guy across the aisle had an app on his iPad that he was using to track our flight in real time throughout the flight. It wasn't only on approach where we were in range of cell towers, it was the whole time. The plane was tracked over what looked like navigation charts overlaid on a satellite image.

Any thoughts on what it was? I would love to get that app. Thanks in advance!

There are numerous aviation apps for the iPad that you can buy that have moving map displays as long as you pre-load the maps prior to takeoff. These rely on GPS, so if you can receive enough of the satellites inside the 'tube', you can follow along. One app that comes to mind is Sky Charts Pro.
Edit: Only certain models of the iPad have a built in GPS chip. Otherwise a small plug in GPS receiver can easily attached.

It's probably more like Flight Radar 24. Which is a lot better than Flightaware (in my opinion)

If you were going to/from Las Vegas last week, it could have been me! Probably not though. Here's a YouTube link that I made a while back on how I live track my flight.

I use Android devices.
I've also switched over to All-In-One Offline Maps app by Psyberia, it has many map formats you can use like terrain, regular, aviation maps etc.

The next thing I'll be trying is using the Black Box MKII Airband Monitor during my upcoming flight in a few weeks. I miss United Ch 9 SO BAD!! I'll
only be able to get the flight deck chatter and not tower, but it will be better than nothing.

Take a look at Flightradar24. It was probably that.
