Prepar3D v4 or X-Plane 11?

Wed Jun 28, 2017 7:49 pm

Hey folks, I'm just looking for opinions on the latest flight simulators. I currently have X-Plane 10, so I'm a little more inclined to go with v11, but I've heard great things about P3D v4.

Thanks in advance.

If you can handle the license costs, go with P3D. This is a question many people will be asking as scenery developers beginning to walk away from FSX.

Yeah, I always thought of FSX as just a flight simulator, that is not very high quality. I only use it because it's decently cheap for a Flight Simulator.

I'm going to say X-Plane 11 without a doubt. The flight models and physics are superior, especially if you spring for some of the paid ad on aircraft. With a good computer and some free additional software, you can get it looking pretty life like.

The difference in "feel" seems to come from the fact that Xplane uses blade element theory (http://www.x-plane.com/desktop/how-x-plane-works/), while fsx and p3d do not. I can't comment on the airliners, but Xplane 11's C172 is pretty much as close as you're gonna get to the real thing, minus an actual full motion sim.

X-plane fans usually say something like that, but have no actual basis to back up the claims of "superior flight physics". X-plane uses live simulated aerodynamics, P3D uses tables based on the aircraft data.

Austin Myers is a human being, if he was offered a good amount of money he would have sold X-plane to Lockheed Martin in a heartbeat, but Lockheed went and got Microsoft's "unrealistic" simulator.

Hmmmm wonder why?

When did I say that FSX or P3D are unrealistic?

Don't take me wrong. I'm not trying to be an xplane fanboy by any means - in fact, when I used to use FSX and P3D a lot I got annoyed by people saying that kind of thing as well. When I finally got around to trying Xplane after all these years, it sold me. It genuinely does feel a lot more realistic and immersive. The basis in which I back up that claim is my own experience with the software, and comparing to real aircraft I've flown. Where I see the most difference is with stall and turbulence physics, with "standard" day to day flying they are pretty similar, especially when comparing with P3D.

They're both great simulator platforms, but I do really believe Xplane is better.
