Should I get a PPL before or after college, If i don't want a career in aviation

Sun Feb 26, 2017 3:17 pm

Hi,
From the coming April till August I'm totally free(like every single day), in September I'll be starting college.

What I want to know is, should I get myself a PPL before college or should I wait till college's over and have a stable job....

And, is flying a plane like riding a cycle/motorcycle/car in terms of memory ? Like you wont forget it for a long time....

PS I always wanted to fly but never wanted it as a career.

Yes and no. I find it very easy to fly, and could get into any rental Cessna or Piper any day and fly it pretty much by memory. For safe and correct operation however it is necessary to follow up on the theory every now and then. You might also check local regulations on how often (and how) the license and ratings need to be re-validated.
I have the option of renewing my SEP(L) rating every two years by either flying 12 hours (must be within one year of expiry) prior to taking a flying lesson with an instructor, or by going for a flying test. The former might sound more expensive, but the downside of the latter is that I probably couldn't pass without flying a couple of hours prior to taking it anyway, the test costs the same as up to 6 hours of flying on my own, I might fail the test and it will be less fun than just flying 12(13) hours.

Is the weather generally good in that period? If not, then you likely won't get much flying done, potentially not completing you license.
Can you afford to go flying while in college? Licenses need re-validation, and you should keep yourself up-to-date. Do you know how much it will cost to rent a plane in your local area? Will you need to buy your own headsets, charts etc?
