Visiting Boneyards in January - Need Some Help

Thu Dec 15, 2016 7:14 am

Hey everyone - I’m a new member and this is my first official post but I love what I’ve been reading so far.

I’m approaching aviation enthusiasm from a slightly different angle than most participants in this forum. I love to make things out of interesting materials. For the past year and a half I’ve had the chance to make watches out of airplane aluminum.

The first iteration of the watch was minimalist in design and the metal I had the opportunity to work with was general reclaimed and repurposed airplane aluminum.

The first watch was so fun to work on that I’m looking to design and build a second watch. A pilots watch.

This time instead of using general airplane aluminum I’m going all in. I’ll be visiting airplane boneyards and making watches out of specific airplane parts that I know the history of.

But, I thought if I’m going to do this I should do it right. Which meant asking the people that love aviation the most what kinds of features and parts they would like to see in a watch like this.

So, I wanted to hear from you. If you were going to wear a watch and you knew the metal the watch is made of came from an airplane which airplane would you want it to be?

Then secondly, (and this is much more broad) what would you like the watch to look like?

Like I said I’m really excited to bring this to life. It’s so fun to work with reclaimed materials. On top of that just being able to preserve the history of the plane for enthusiasts like yourselves is an added bonus.

I’ve been in contact with a few boneyards and will be making the trips come the new year. (Hopefully while I’m visiting the boneyards I can report back with a few awesome pics.)

Any input you can provide will GREATLY influence the future of this watch. I hope to make a watch you’d think is wonderful.

A DC10MD11 or a classic such as a 747 or a accident aircraft would sell well to av geeks

That's an amazing idea. Out of interest, how did you find/approach the boneyards?
