Turbulences Caused By Giants!

Sun Dec 10, 2000 11:16 pm

Hello All,

We know about that turbulences called "Wake Vortices" caused by aircrafts, and how dangerous are they for a following aircraft specially when close to the runway during landing or take off. A set of regulations was put to avoid that by making a safety distance between aircrafts on the final approach.

I can imagine the new coming giants, A3XX and B747X, producing huge wake vortices that will prevent any other smaller aircraft from even think about getting closer to the approach!!

What are the effects of the new giants on traffic patterns?

Thanks...

Within the last 20 years it has been discoverd that it is no the size of the aircraft that determines the severity of the wake turbulence. It was found that the 757 has the worst wake turbulence of any of the transport category aircraft. For what reason? NASA is not sure.

Aircraft arriving or departing behind 757's are given heavy aircraft seperation requirments.
