Depends upon what airplane and what autopilot & equipment is installed. Most commonly used to have autopilot navigate a ground course computed by a Flight Management System (FMS).

OR if you don't have FMS the NAV funtion is used to have the autopilot track the selected VOR or GPS, as opposed to heading mode to fly just the heading bug.

On the Saab 340 depending on what radio config they have, the Arnav is driving the captains display and auto pilot mode. some of the models have an autopilot that has to be switched from left to right depending on which pilot is flying.
If there is two MFP's (multi-function panels) on the aircraft, the nav mode will operate off of each display respectively. if the FO wants to use the Arnav then he needs to press nav on the right MPF which recieves its info from #2 Vor or Loc then the Lnav Button is selected, the info comes off of the captains side and the Arnav. I know it Sounds confusing but it really isnt.
