Runway Questions

Thu Oct 19, 2000 9:43 am

what purpose do the numbers mean that are posted on signs off to the side of the runway... "5", "6", "7"...etc I was thinking they are markers for thousands of feet left on the runway but do pilots actually see those numbers? They are kind of small and not lighted.

Are they for the benefit of the planes or vehicles that may be driving on the access road?

You're right those signs mark the remaining number of feet on that runway. 5=5,000 feet remianing and so on.. There purpose is just to let the pilot know how much more runway they have to use. Hope this helps

No you are correct. Each number represents passing 1000 feet. Thus a 10000 foot runway would have numbers one to ten.

Wouldn't it make it more visible to the pilot to paint those numbers on the runway itself? I mean, you're going 175 mph and those signs are awfully small...off to the side like that.

Uh.... no.
The last place I'm going to be looking at 175mph is... down!
One can easily see the signs without looking directly at them.

Okforall,

Actually, a 10,000 foot runway would only have the RDR signs 9 through 1.

At many airports, these signs are lighted for use at night.

Bruce- don't forget that the pilot also has other ways of knowing if he is running out of runway, ie. the amber edge lights for the last 2000 feet remaining, or the centerline lights, if equipped, alternate red/white starting at 3000 feet remaining, and then change to all red at 1000 feet remaining.
