16 Solo

Thu Jun 22, 2000 9:22 am

I am a 15 year old student pilot and I have just been told by my FAA medical examiner that he can't give me my physical until I turn 16. Is this true? I have heard of other people soloing right on their birthdays, that is what is putting the questions in my mind. Can someone please help me out? Thanks.

Sec. 61.83 Eligibility requirements for student pilots.

To be eligible for a student pilot certificate, an applicant must:
(a) Be at least 16 years of age for other than the operation of a glider or balloon
(b) Be at least 14 years of age for the operation of a glider or balloon.

Sec. 61.103 Eligibility requirements: General.

To be eligible for a private pilot certificate, a person must:
(a) Be at least 17 years of age for a rating in other than a glider or balloon.
(b) Be at least 16 years of age for a rating in a glider or balloon.

Hypthetically, you could tell him you are going to be a glider pilot... However, that would require some massive falsifying of your logbook before you apply for a rating; so I would not suggest it. (Assuming you already know a CFI who is willing to break the rules and risk his cert. to let you log dual hours with him while only 14 ys old)

Try another medical examiner. There are usually several available in a town. The next guy might not live by the rules. Your 3rd class medical will be your student license, so "technically" the 1st Dr. is correct by not examining you yet.

I had my medical before my 16th birthday and soloed on my 16th birthday.

If all else fails... get the medical at 0800 on your birthday and then solo later in the day.

Best of luck.
