Spot

Mon May 01, 2000 9:45 am

Although I haven't yet operated my own aircraft under ramp procedures and am not yet familiar with the physics of flow control, when I'm flying I often hear airline flights calling for either clearance or push-back instructed by Ramp, Clearance, or Ground to "Call back again at Spot 5," or something to that effect. Having never encountered the term "spot ___ " in general aviation, I'm wondering what it actually means...

"Spots" are designated points where taxiways meet the "company" ramp. The immediate area around the gates and terminals is usually controlled by the dominating airine,as far as traffic control and movements. The company tower will instruct an outbond flight (that has just been released from pushback and is ready to taxi) to go to a "spot" (where a "ground control" taxiway meets the ramp) to be handed over to the FAA ground control, usually with the proper freqency for the area of ground control. "OK 228,take it to spot 7,ground point 9" (121.9). Where the ramp is large, and the entry and exit taxiways are many, the "spots" will be numerated. I'm sure it varies from airport to airport,as some are quite complex.
