Why does the cockpit voice warning in MD-10 and MD-11 sound so computery?

Sun May 19, 2019 1:37 am

Here’s a video of MD-11 cockpit while landing: https://youtu.be/hWMQ156rJK4?t=580

Skip to 9:40. Listen to the “Approaching Minimums” and altitude callouts. Why does it sound very artificial, like old 1980’s digital voice synthesizers? Or like a robot from movies? Is it because the voice is being generated by an actual voice synthesizer chip, or is it that they were using very low quality audio playback?

At first when I heard the voice on flight simulator videos, I thought the player was just using the wrong sound recordings pack, but it turns out that it’s actually in the real planes.

Maybe one of the comments in this one answers your question. Probably not the same voice, but it sounds like when they were recording it, they wanted it to be more monotone.

McDonnell-Douglas has the best cockpit voice callouts imo. It tells you exactly what's going on rather than just a sound like on Boeing and Airbus.

That’s not proven to be more effective. The EICAS system on Boeing give you two stimuli, visual and aural, for cautions and warnings. Directs you to look at EICAS and read the alert.

Both Douglas and Embaer use a lot more voice aura is. Problem is that starts to desensitize the crew.

As I recall, you can get this voice in both male and female versions.

Somewhere on the net you can find the woman who made the female versions of these call outs.

I bet it is that lady. I wonder why it was recorded with a no tone voice though.

You'd have to ask the aircraft manufacturer that. Looking at the comments, she was asked to make it more monotone.

You can look this woman up on Gogle. Just type in Bitchin Betty and you will see she retired from Boeing a few years back.

I think she also provided the audio alerts for the F18

I think having Gunny Ermey's voice up front with you would be a hoot!. "Dammit maggot!! Keep it on the center line!!"

Should’ve gone with Frau Farbissina for voicing.

Accents.

English is a lingua franca is this business. But that doesn't mean all the regions of the Anglo sphere actually sound the same. Leave alone the rest of the world speaking it as an auxiliary language.

So they'll use a voice like this, which is clearly enunciated no matter what the word is. Even it sounds flat.
