B787 cockpit windscreen issues

Sun Jan 20, 2019 3:57 pm

While browsing AeroInside, I noticed that the B787 has quite a few cockpit windscreen issues, has anyone got any more info on this.

Is it a case of these new plastic fuselages flexing too much?

What "issues" are you referring to? Can you link an article or something?

I haven't read about any windscreen issues?
Since when is the fuselage plastic? The fuselage is primarily carbon fiber

This is direct from the source linked:
Spirit was chosen to manufacture the 787’s entire forward fuselage — called Section 41 — which includes the cockpit, cockpit windscreens, two doors, nine passenger windows and all of the avionics, cockpit seating and wiring. Measuring 6.2m in diameter and 12.8m long, Section 41 is, arguably, the most complex of the plane’s fuselage sections.

Hard to imagine there could be any flex at all in a one piece unit.

In the first few years of service, cracks in the uppermost layer (of five) were occurring at a rate higher than expected. I'm not sure what the final "fix" was between Boeing and PPG (the supplier), but I recall it was addressed.

Plastic is a tongue in cheek term us old maintenance engineers call the latest aircraft since epoxy is the stuff used to hold it all together. Airbus use a different technique to build their fuselages and I don't think they've had any issues with cracking windshields, hence my query. Looks like it was a window issue.

Refer to this page and scroll down to see many instances of cracked windshields:

The A350 cockpit section is still metal for birdstrike reasons.
