747-400 Engine types and different fuel efficiency

Tue Jan 08, 2019 10:31 pm

Ok I know the 747-400 isn’t production anymore but does anybody know witch 747-400 engine is the most fuel efficient?

I've read that RR are the most efficient, but most expensive to acquire/maintain, GE's the opposite & P&W in between the two in both aspects.

Strangely, I've heard differently from a RR bloke :- Comparing brand new engines, the RB211 is in third place. However, the RB211 deteriorates less, so after a year or two in service, it's the best - and thus stays on-wing longer than PW/GE. The fact that all three engines picked up big fleets suggest that the practical differences may be small.

Looking at the Boeing ACAPS docs, you'll see that OOB, the PW is best, GE in the middle, and RR last. Anecdotally, GE had better efficiency retention than PW, and overall better from a support standpoint, while RR had the best on-wing time. The 211-524G/H-T fixed some of that by using the T700 combustors, IIRC that was worth a few % TSFC.
