Airports That Pipe VS Truck Their Fuel

Mon Oct 08, 2018 9:09 pm

Hi.

Which airports pipe their fuel in? Let's maybe start with the majors in the US and Europe.. All of them?

Or partially? Do you have any info about your local airport?...

Thanks..

Regards.

I’d say just about every airline airport is on gas line, fewer hydrant refuel on the ramp.

Here in Europe, Berlin-Tegel (TXL) is one of the largest airports where fuel gets to the aircraft by fuel truck for 100% of the flights. And all the fuel is trucked to the airport, too, as it has no fuel depot on site.

I don't know the reason for not having the depot on site. Perhaps it was safety related, because the airport is just northwest of the city center and well within the city. Perhaps it's just because there was no space when they extended the airport inthe 1970s. Later when pipe systems got installed everywhere they probably didn't think of it as financially viable anymore because since the late 1990s it was planned to replace TXL with BER (which now in 2018 is under construction for 12 years and counting).

Beside what I said above, there is an absolutely huge number of airports where fuel gets trucked. Actually it will be the very, very large majority of all airports. Think of every small / regional airport and even old, larger ones, where the investment later was never made to rip up all the apron. Or airports in undeveloped countries, where the investment for such a system was too large.

I guess it would be way easier to name the airports, which pump their fuel by underground pipes to the aircraft. Sure, that will be a long list, too, but it will be major airports and the list will be way shorter than the list of airports using fuel trucks or pump trucks.

FRA gets most of the fuel by barge, with the last mile piped from Kelsterbach/Floersheim.. For refueling, every stand at FRA is connected to the Underground pipe System.

MUC receives fuel by Train, may be someone from MUC can tell how many tank cars per day ae needed.

Supplying large Airports by truks would be quite expensive and add to congestion

Thx..

PHL is notorious for being the largest (at least US) airport without an inground fuel system

The distinction needs making here between fuel pipelines to the airport, and the onsite hydrant system. Many airports have that pipeline to a fuel farm, and tankers fill up from there to deliver to aircraft on hardstands.

Others have the hydrant system where there is a point on each gate to which a fuel pumping truck can connect.

Some airports in the past have even done it in reverse where tankers deliver to the fuel farm and a hydrant system then pumps it to the gate. That's pretty rare these days and generally only ever used in low traffic settings.

City government. Direct your questions here: https://www.phl.org/Pages/AboutPHL/managementTeam.aspx

The simple answer is .....money. Who pays for installation, and who benefits are not the same. Why should the airport operator (city, taxpayers) pay to rip up the ramp to install fuel hydrants? They only get a slightly safer operation. The airlines get a small benefit in faster fueling time, handy when the inbound flight was late, because planes only make money when they are in the air. The real beneficiaries are the fueling contractors who don't have to pay their drivers for all the "down-time" to re-fill the tankers. They can fill planes their whole shift, meaning they need fewer dirvers.
