How to get used jet oil from turbine engine

Fri Oct 05, 2018 7:06 am

Hi experts,

I am not really in this industry but I do have project working with aviation field. May I know is it possible to obtain used jet oil from turbine engine? From my understanding jet oil will be consumed in operation. Thank in advance.

Engine oil on a jet engine is not changed like on a car because oil is continuously consumed, unless contamination is suspected. Oil filters are changed on a regular basis but are usually discarded. Filters may be retained for analysis if required. Anything found on magnetic chip detectors is also retained for analysis.

Depending on what your project is, maybe find a power plant using an aeroderivative, GE LM2500/CF6-6 and GE LM6000/CF6-80C2 are by far the most common although Pratt JT2D-217/FT-8 and Rolls RB211 and Trents are out there also. Those engines use the same oil, though they have large sumps which allow topping up in five-gallon increments (for example) rather than quarts.

As the two above mention, it doesn't happen often. But it isn't impossible. My suggestion is that you try to contact a friendly engineer or MRO facility and see if they will listen to you (a small facility working on business jets is probably easier than, say, Lufthansa Technik or United Tech Ops). Worst case, offer to pay for a new can of oil or something.

Oil is often changed when an engine is removed and "zero timed". Find an MRO doing engine changes and you find plenty of used oil being disposed of.
