I am a year 9 student who will be in year 10 next year. It is compulsory at my school to do a week of work experience at a company of your choice. I wanted to get it sorted out as early as I can. I am Extremely interested and passionate about all things Aviation and want to be a pilot when I am older. I have emailed multiple companies such as Qantas, Virgin, Tigerair, Jetstar, and Rex regional express, and have only been replied to by rex who said they only offer customer service work experience in Sydney and I live in Melbourne. I have also emailed Melbourne Airport, Essendon Airport, and Moorabbin airport who also have yet to responded. 1.Does anyone know any companies that do offer aviation related work experience? 2. Do you think it would be a good idea to ring up the companies and ask them on the phone or would it be a waste of time?

Though you could try ringing around I would say you probably won’t have much success. To work in aviation in Australia you will need to have a drug and alcohol test plus you will either need an ASIC card or at very least a VIC (which is a visitors pass), the difference between the two apart from cost is with a VIC pass you will need to be escorted everywhere. On top of that depending on who it is with you may also need a medical
Test before commencing. The cost of all this can easily be over $500.
Having said this contacting airports directly is a waste of time. Because a lot of airlines outsource you are better off contacting ground services such as Swissport, dnata, QGS, cabin services etc

Maybe try some of the flying schools that operate out of secondary airports?
I did work experience in year 11 (I think) at a flying school at Parafield Airport, which included a couple of flights! Although that would have been in 1987 and I’m sure things have changed dramatically from a security perspective since then.

A friend of mine did work experience at an aircraft restoration business in outer Melbourne, but it’s probably going to be hard to find anything in aviation due to licensing and security requirements in a lot of rolls. I’d start with reaching out to small businesses personally, such as aeroclubs and maitnence providors at some of the smaller airfields like lillydale, tyabb or bachaus Marsh.
