There is quite a bit of exhaust pipe between the outside and the APU proper.
But still I'd guess damage will reach into the structural bulkhead the APU is attached to.

Preliminary estimate from just one exterior picture: More than $1 and less than $5M.
Inspect, Replace or Repair:

Bleed air ducting

It is very difficult to tell the extend of the damage from a single picture.

So, as nobody else asked... Is it a write-off?
At high end of an estimate, $5M, it is not impossible to be the case for a 16 year old frame...

Probably not a write off. $5M would be a worst case doom and gloom estimate. Without having an accurate survey of the damage, I would throw that number out there with the understanding that once the damage is fully known a real world estimate would be presented based on the survey.
So really, $5M or less, probably a lot less. And who knows? If they had an aircraft down for a heavy check, They might be able to can the parts and have the damaged aircraft flying within a week or 2.

The repair estimate has to be based on whether the APU itself is damaged or just the tail cone. the rudder could be repaired pretty quickly depending on the damage but you would first have to estimate the damage to the hinge structure on the rudder and the vertical stabilizer. If those are ok? Then the composite repairs appear minor and could be fixed by them? Or send it to SFO for repair as United will only charge them for Time and Materials. I'd estimate the rudder repair under $10K
I can't give you an estimate for the APU as I've never laid Eyed on one of theirs..

Sounds about right. If any hidden damage is minor, It could be back to flying in a few days. If the info I found is correct, the aircraft is operated by Continental Express and I would imagine that they may even have some EMB145's parked or in heavy maintenance to can some parts from somewhere in their system. So, definitely under $5M. Do you think the repairs could come in at $100K to $1M If hidden damage is minor?
