TPA's runway 9-27

Mon Jul 30, 2018 12:55 pm

How unusual is it for airline operations on Tampa's runway 9-27? I've probably flown in and out of TPA a dozen times and never seen an airliner land on 9-27, but last weekend, on a flight from Atlanta, our A321 flew a very entertaining approach parallel to I-275 and landed on 27. Yes, there were a lot of storms north and west of the airport. Rare?

Ive worked at TPA and ive seen it used numerous times. Seen lits of 737s and 757s (IIRC) land on it and the 3M planes use it it all the time

Have also seen it used during the rare event of strong E-W crosswinds.

I remember seeing a DL L1011 land on it once back in the late 70s.

TPA tried to make me land with a 25 knot crosswind on the 1s.

No thanks, we will take 27.

Are you sure? Yes.

Next controller: You still want 27? Yes.

A lot of noise abatement issues for controllers to deal with.

If you ask for it, which is rare, you will get it

Yeah, the only airliners I regularly see use it are 3M.

Even the BA 777 has used it before.

Extensively used if a hurricane/troop storm is in the gulf blowing out of the west.

BA used it yesterday

By the way, it was changed to 10-28 a while ago...like 15 years.

Over the years I have seen plenty of heavy aircraft using this runway. More often, taking off and landing to the west. I used to enjoy spotting in a parking lot of the old TPA terminal adjacent to the old Boy Scout Rd. I have seen 707s,720s, 880s, stretched -8s, 747's, -10 s and L-1011s using this runway. Back in the early 90s landed to the east on a DL 762 out of ATL. Pretty cool to watch.

Sure you're not confusing that with the 18-36s changing to 1-19s? I could swear the east-west was changed first

EDIT: My bad...you are correct

When I worked there I saw numerous landings on it. Worked a ramp next to FedEx so we had a real good view of it. I flew DEN-TPA a couple years back and we landed on it, got a great view of Downtown Tampa.

Thanks for the videos! I lived in Clearwater for a year several years ago and regularly flew out of TPA. However, I never got to see 9-27 used during that time and have not been back since then.
