Why wasn't the transall C-160 successful as an airline plane?

I always thought this craft's size could make it suitable for some high density short routes, specially in some under developed countries...

Why wasn't it??

Probably for the same reason as the C-130... DOC. (direct operating costs).

Where do you put the luggage?

It makes more sense to have luggage below the floor.

Most commuter props don't have underfloor luggage... it's fore and/or aft the passenger cabin on the same level.

Yeah, but this isn't a commuter sized aircraft. It is the same size as an A319!

I have no idea if it is correct, but one website states:

Fuel consumption with both engines operating varies from 2, 100 lb to 2,755 lb (950 kg to 1250 kg) per hr and the manufacturer claims that this figure is about 30 per cent better than its competitors on a given mission.

The figure seems a bit small, perhaps that is for each engine, not both?

the Luftwaffe page on that type has a range/fuel example:
3,800km, 5t payload, 13,000kg fuel incl. reserves ( cruise 455km/h / 8h35min nominal)

1.5t reserves -> 1375kg/h
