737-10MAX Landing gear

Sat Jul 07, 2018 7:01 pm

I have been trying to wrap my head around what a "Trailing landing gear" is and why the 737-10MAX needs the change. There are a few posts on this site about it but no direct answer to my questions. So my question is....

What does the 737-10MAX landing gear do vs the normal 737 landing gear and why is it needed?

In simplistic terms, it reduces the likelihood of tailstrikes by positioning the wheels of the bogie further aft.

So it lifts the back of the plane up so it doesnt need 10,000 meters of runway?

It moves the rotating point, the rear gear, further back towards the tail.

The further back the gear touches the ground, the steeper the rotation angle it can handle before a tail strike. That translates to shorter take-off run.

10,000 meters? Are you joking?

No. The 737-10Max main gear will allow the main gear wheels to be further aft, thus providing a better - from the take off performance prespective - pivot point. This means the -10Max will have greater tail clearance than the it would have had if the gear hadn't been changed.

Please see this photo (F-18):

As the weight comes off the gear (when the aircraft is in flight), the gear leg straightens and will still retract into the 737s main gear wheelwell.

This would have been a nice feature on the 737-900s and -9Max, too, but the runway issues stated on this forum are routinely over-blown.

Watching the gear retraction of the F-18, and I'm curious wouldn't actual landing gear doors be required on the Max 10. Embraer went with full landing gear doors for the E2 when switched to trailing link landing gear just wondering if the Max 10 would have to do the same.

It won’t have gear doors.

Maybe at the airlines that the poster works for allows single engine dispatch per the MEL. :rotfl:

The 737 does have gear doors that cover the strut. Do you know if those are being modified for the 737-10? I would assume that there are some changes to the extension/retraction system,.

The gear leg on the 737-10 will “shrink” if that makes any sense and then rotate into the fuselage. I’m assuming the strut covers will be modified to cover them.
