Airline Specific Procedures

Wed Jun 20, 2018 6:46 pm

From this interesting link: http://www.boeing.com/commercial/aeroma ... laska.html

Apparently some airlines have special procedures only they can use. Alaska is even certified to design their own RNAV approaches. These procedures wouldn't be published on sources like airnav, CIFP, etc. Is there any way to figure out where these exist/what they look like?

No, that’s why they are special procedures, need to know basis. If you’re not approved, you don’t need to know.

To nitpick, Alaska Airlines is not "certified to design their own RNAV approaches". It's not like Alaska Airlines can design approaches and implement them "on its own". They still have to be tested and certified. You'll note the article says "with the assistance of Boeing navigation system and performance experts" as well as "gain operational approval". That last part is the biggie.

Airlines and avionics vendors do design approaches. If operational advantages are gained, it can be money well spent. But again, approval is required.

To add to what GalaxyFlyer says, these procedures are RNP (AR), the "AR" standing for "Approval Required". You can't use them without specific regulator approval, which would involve training crews and such. Thus they are by their very nature proprietary to the airline(s) with the approval.

Stand to be corrected, but there are public (published to all operators) RNP-AR approaches and private, operator access only, approaches. Both require national CAA approval for use, but private approaches, RNP-AR or custom conventional procedures are not published or databased to the public, only approved operators.

That sounds right. My bad for forgetting the public ones. Mentioned on page 6 of this Airbus document, for example. https://www.theairlinepilots.com/forumarchive/aviation-regulations/rnp-ar.pdf

Alright, that's about what I figured. Thanks for the clarifications, I've still got a lot to learn about everything that goes into procedure design and approval.
